High Ponds Farm at Burnt Mountain on Hazen's Notch is a beautifully (and minimally) managed cross-country ski and hiking area in Montgomery Center, VT. I'm not a skier, but spending countless hours hiking (or leisurely walking) on the trails in the summer, late spring and fall is a highlight of any day. Hanging out in the big meadow in the fall looking at the foliage or munching on an apple from the orchard, or in the summertime amidst the wildflowers, or sitting on a rock watching beavers swimming around in a beaver pond, or walking on a trail deep in the lush green forest, is akin to a religious experience in my book. I can't say enough about the beauty and peacefulness of this lovely place. P.S. Trip Advisor only gave me one choice for "sort of visit" and "When did you visit," but I go often with both friends and solo.
Well maintained. Beautiful place. Bring your dog, but don't fish there....not allowed. Great hikes. Lots of Beavers, frogs, toads, salamanders! Go hike the mountain, but wear your hiking boots, you'll need them on your way back down. The views from the mountain are spectacular!
We went to Hazen's Notch for snowshoeing. The price was just $5 since the trails hadn't been groomed from the recent snowfall. We were given a trail map and some directions. We got a little lost, but the trails are lovely and its a nice hike. A few extra trail signs would be useful, especially if the trails hadnt been used/groomed. Still, a lovely place to enjoy the outdoors- much prettier than the Nordic center at Jay Peak.
This is a very beautiful narrow winding road through the notch. beautiful farm country sides at each end of the notch before entering the higher elevations. Up in the notch, nice waterfalls and deep forest. Shady and cool even on the hottest days.
We enjoyed the well groomed trails in Hazen's Notch and the hike up to the summit with the 360 views of mountains all around must be amazing in fall.
During the summer and fall, this is a lovely drive. In the winter, this is where we go to cross country ski. The trails are not crowded and provide both wooded skiing and great views. The fact that this is a small operation is part of the appeal for us. The trails will not be as well groomed as larger places, but the welcome and overall experience is much warmer and more personal.Sadly, this past winter the area didn't get enough snow for the trails to be open:(
a trip down the Hazens Notch Rd takes you through the notch; a breath-taking cut into the mountain range that is best seen during foliage season but also spectacular in Spring and Summer. Road is closed at the notch during the Winter months. Bring your camera for this scene!
Great for cross country skiing too!! This is one of the prettiest drives for montgomery center visitors. We own a small bed and breakfast, and most of our guests visit this area even in the winter where they can go cross country skiing or snow shoeing at Hazens Notch Cross Country Ski Center. There are wonderful hiking trails we have maps for as well that let our guests visit beaver ponds, and wooded vistas. I have hiked here several times, and love it!! Jay Kerch
