Living in Lyndonville, we frequently go to Lake Willoughby. It is a great place for ice fishing, summer fishing, swimming and canoeing. One of our favorite motorcycle rides is swing up by Lake Willoughby,If you are in the area it is a must see!!
I have had the pleasure of spending a week at a Mountain Lake Cottages. Actually 2 out of the last 3 years I have visited here. The cottages are lake front and the views from the property are amazing.Renee is an amazing hostess who will make sure your stay is exceptional. The rates are very reasonable and the cottages themselves are clean and well stocked. The area offers many things outdoor related. I am sure that are other things to do, but when I am here I spend as much time outside as I can.
Beautiful lake in quaint little town. Something to do summer and winter! Snowmobile trails start right near the lake for the winter, ice fishing and of course boating and swimming.
It is my favorite place to kayak. The water is beautiful and the beauty that surrounds the lake is amazing.
I just drove around the lake and stopped to take some pictures. It looks like a great place to go in the summer, as there are beaches on each end, and did not appear to have much in the way of "tourist traps". I have always been for wind power, until I saw the windmills on the tops of the hills surrounding this beautiful lake. It really took away from the scene.
I cant say enough about this lake, the water is cold but crystal clear, the mountains are just breathtaking and you can kayak, paddle board, canoe or bike around the lake, and there's plenty of rental places if you don't want to bring your own.
We came across lake Willoughby by accident while on vacation. The kids loved the fact that from the beach they could walk and walk before it got to deep. It was a great way to spend a day with the kids.
Went to Lake Willoughby to hike Mt. Pisgah and stopped at the 'beach' to have a look. "Beach" is basically a boat launch and public access for the trailer park tenants living across the road. Lake is beautiful. Perhaps there is a nice beach somewhere else on the lake?
Willoughby Lake is in such a gorgeous setting and the water is crystal clear! We love to go swimming and hiking there.
We went for a day, although there are plenty of places to camp and stay in cottages or cabins. Gorgeous lake, beautiful beach and picnic area. Parking is free!
We camped at the Will-oh-Woods campground. They said it was b family friendly but there was a lot of drinking and partying going on that weekend. The problem I had with this is that people were very loud past curfew and the management did not enforce. Area is beautiful and the camp site was well set up. All in all a good time still.
My husbands family owns a cabin on Lake Willoughby so we try to get up there as often as possible (but it's a long drive from NC). The view from the sun room/sleeping porch is one I could certainly wake up to every morning. It's a glacier lake and is over 300 feet deep in some places so you may see scuba divers in the water. The locals claim there is a giant eel in the lake that they have named "Willy the Lake Monster". Keep your eyes open and you may see him. If you enjoy hiking take advantage of the trails around Mt. Pisgah and Mt. Hor. We've hike Pisgah (to the top) and they offer easy trails (if up a mountain can really be easy) and advanced trails.
This is one of my favorite spots. It is absolutely breathtaking. Travel north on route 5a and you will enjoy the ahhhhhh wow! Of the view when you arrive. There is a beach on both the south and north end. Drive around the east side and enjoy the cute cottage views. Crystal Lake is northwest of this lake and also beautiful but you must pay to enter parks to use the beaches. There is a tale from locals that a large horse drawn carriage crew once fell over one of the mountains at lake Willoughby. Many years later pieces of the wreckage where found in Crystal lake. Locals think there is some underground waterway connecting them.
Recently went there as part of a family camping trip. Our campsite was in Brighton State park, and this beach was a 15-20min drive away. The water was cold for like 1 min. After that it was fantastic. The beach is close to the road, but there isnt much heavy traffic, and no one is circulating all that fast. Its all sand on the beach and in the water. Water is crystal clear with no kind of weird smell. I would go back any day!
Lake Willoughby is called the Lake Luzerne of America. And rightly so. The grandiose views from all sides of this glacial wonder deserve the crown. There is a sweeping public beach that is located on the north shore..a natural beach, shallow, clean and perfect for bathing, albeit the water is colder as it is spring fed. It's the perfect beach for families. But there is a problem. Seems this beach with it's free parking attracts groups of party animals whose behavior is less than conducive to a relaxed and safe place to spend the day. On our visit, we had to drive around a large group of people with their beer coolers parked right in the road, blocking two way traffic. There is no lifeguard on duty, and being a remote location, few if any visits from police. This group of about 25 young adults (many of questionable legal age) were obviously very intoxicated, shouting obscenities and vulgar language while chasing each other down the sands, disturbing many, so much so, that most folks gathered up their kids and blankets and had to leave the beach. It was quite hot out, and it seemed unfair and offensive that law abiding folks with their children had to give up their day on the beach to a bunch of hooligans whose actions were dangerous and appalling.Westmore and the surrounding area is beautiful beyond words, and Lake Willoughby is no exception. It's worth a drive to see this magnificent NEK jewel, but if you are taking your children to the beach for the day, you'd be better off going a few miles west to Crystal Lake in Barton, where the State of Vermont maintains one of the most beautiful and family friendly parks with a stellar beach and facilities that were built during the 1930's, lovingly preserved and pristine.I hope that Westmore finds some way to curb this problem at their public beach, as over the years it has earned a negative reputation from the locals. Such a shame.
