My lovely bride and I decided at the last minute to do something on New Year's Eve beside fall asleep in the La-z-boy by 10pm. Our first time out on that night in 10 years, we decided to try a spot we hadn't visited in quite a long time. So we ended up in Gahanna at the Alumni Club. They charged a $5 cover at the door, presumably to cover the cost of the requisite hats and noisemakers, as well as a taste of bubbly at midnight. So far so good. When we arrived about 10:30pm the place was about half full. The bar staff was close to our (middle) age, and dressed for the occasion. They chatted us up for a bit until they got real busy; I was impressed by the friendliness and professionalism of the staff. In back there was a DJ playing tunes (none that I recognized but my wife knew a few) and a few people on the dance floor. Since it is sort of a sports bar, there were TVs on all over the bar with a bowl game on, so I was at least distracted by that.As we approached midnight, the place filled up with a much younger (than us) crowd. My wife did get her wish to dance on New Year's Eve fulfilled to some degree, but the music (and music videos) were all about the booty and twerking. Whaaattt? This seemed like an absurd situation for a relatively docile suburban bar. But I guess their guests seemed to enjoy it. It would have been better had the DJ mixed in a few songs from the "good ol' days" of rock and roll and disco. At one point, we got up to dance to a remake of an old disco classic, but it quickly devolved into a booty song. No thanks.I know we're... OLD. But really? Show a little class. Get a better DJ and we might return next year.
