First, the building itself is so magnificent. No picture could possibly touch how intricate the woodwork, fireplace and all the decorations are.The staff are warm, friendly and very skilled. You feel pampered as soon as you walk in.I had a massage and facial which were equal to most I've had. It's the whole package that, all together, leaves you satiated.I heartedly recommend it!
I guess I don't get the negative reviews. I have been there (not often enough) over the past several years for a whole day, facials, massages and pedicures. Particularly like the stone therapy massage I had in Ausust 2012. The house is beautiful and its return to glory is well documented if you have time to look at the albums and are fortunate enough to meet Laurie.I used to wonder who would come to little Grand Rapids for the spa. Apparently a lot of people. The atmosphere is elegant and serene and the service personalized. The basement has a dining area, a beautiful large hot tub ( yes I have used it), bathroom and several massage tables with privacy curtains and quiet music playing. The main floor is beautifully decorated in the period of the house. These ARE antiques. Several bedrooms up the beautiful open oak staicase and in the attic: a tiny little adorable private reading nook. The rest of the area is open for yoga. Can't imagine what more you could want?????
It looks nice on the outside, but nothing fancy or special. I had a massage and they took me to the basement. Not a lower level, nicely finished area... a basement. You got in a hot tub to start with whoever else is there for a spa treatment. I don't know how often they change out the water, but I felt uncomfortable and not relaxed in this hot tub. Then they take you to a massage table that is sectioned off by curtains. No private area. I felt like a dog being sent in to get groomed. The girl next to me was getting a massage and the lady was chopping away at her back and I heard everything. I was tensed up by listening to the person's massage next to me. Worst spa experience
This "spa" is not a "spa" at all, so don't expect one. Aside from the rude service, which I won't get into, I was terribly disappointed in the treatments. My mother and I booked ourselves a "spa day" at the Kerr House because we received gift cards as presents. We walked in and were escorted into the basement and seated in very uncomfortable, wicker chairs for our pedicures. The pedicures were given with the cheap plug-in pedicure tubs that you can get from walmart. There was nothing professional AT ALL about our service, including the lack of any professional creams or polishes. All cheap, random things. The woman doing our pedicures did a french on my toes, and forgot to put a polish on other than the (crooked) white stripes on my toes. She was talking and forgot to file my Mom's feet. The same woman waxed our legs, which was a joke. She put lotion on my right leg twice, forgetting my left leg. By this point in our "Spa Day", we were waiting for someone to jump out telling us that it was all a big joke. Next, were our massages. We were escorted to a very beautiful, large tub where we could soak for a few minutes before the massage. The water was cold and never warmed up. It was miserable. The massage was actually good, but awkward because the three massage tables are all located right beside each other - so you're essentially watching 2 other people be massaged at the same time. I'm so sad to write a report like this. I would never usually complain but this was RIDICULOUS. We still have $250 in gift certificates that we're just going to throw out because going back would be a nightmare.
