First of all, I have golfed here about 6 times. I enjoy this course because its well taken care of, its aesthetically pleasing, its quiet, and I feel very relaxed there. It never seems like its never all that crowded. And although the club house and what it offers is pretty basic, what makes me recommend this place to people right away is the people who work there. On one occasion, when I was first learning to swing a club, I managed to hit a beauty into the windshield of a Cadillac in the parking lot. The course offered to pay half of the cost of the windshield. I thought this went above and beyond what anyone should expect in this situation. On another occasion, I showed up in the evening and wanted to try to squeeze in 18 holes. The manager did not think I could finish and told me to play and when it got too dark, I would come back to the clubhouse and pay for the amount that I played. Well, once I got back to the clubhouse, the manager was outside about to take care of another problem on the course. When I asked what I owed him, he told me not to worry about it and to have a good night. Then he zipped off on a cart to take care of the problem. To me, the attitude of the people at this course makes me come back. I just wish it was a little closer to home.
Full disclosure – the foursome that I golf with likes to play golf for the fun of playing golf. We look for nice well-maintained courses but at the same time, we look for affordable courses. We don’t play many of the higher end / highly manicured courses but generally stick with the smaller but still well managed and well maintained courses.Raccoon International is one of the most reasonable priced courses in the area. Weekday rates are $15 walking / $25 w/ a cart while weekend rates are $22 walking / $32 w/ a cart. The course is generally well maintained IF you overlook the bunkers. Most of the sand traps haven’t seen any sand in a while and most are either growing over with grass or are just hardscape. Our foursome gives you a free-drop out of any of the bunkers. Aside from the bunkers – the course is generally in good shape and has several interesting and/or challenging holes. Among my favorites are #8 (a par four from a dramatic elevated tee that requires a tee shot as long as 220 yards to clear the lake) and #11 (a 121 yard par 3 over a lake to a two tiered green guarded by a meandering bunker). Then there’s the notorious #17 (a par 5 that plays a devilish 666 yards from the back tees). #17 wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t at the end of the course when you’re running out of steam or if it were a par 8 or 9 (LOL).Raccoon has a comfortable club house with typical golf course fare – hot dogs, chips, pop, beer, etc.IMPORTANT NOTE – due to the work on SR 161 over the past few years – the access to this course has changed and is a little convoluted – be sure to check your directions before starting out. Raccoon has good directions posted on their web-site.Course Rating/Slope/Length (yards)• Blue 70.6 /117/6,700• White 68.3 /111/6,194• Red 67.8/1175,127
