The Mentor Marsh is a great place if you want to walk into nature. If you start at the Sweet's house, there is a map on a board showing the different trails maintained by not only the Cleveland Natural History Museum but also, Mentor City and ODNR. There is a trail near the house which has two paths, one is short and stops at the butterfly area or you can continue on the path and walk out to the rim of the marsh and then along the rim and back to the butterfly field. You can also leave the house area and drive a short distance over to the boardwalk which takes you out into the Marsh it's self. As well, there is the Zimmerman Trail which has two places you can enter it. One is at Morton park and the other is off of Headlands road.
I am not sure how to explain this place, its an old house filled with very old nature items and a very small walking path that goes nowhere. People tend to flock to check it out but I have not found it to be worth it.
It was the off season for bird watching. I was disappointed we didn't see more birds. We did see a young deer in the meadow. Wear insect repellant. The mosquitos are biting.
You may have to use your GPS or a map to get to but this vest pocket nature center but it is well worth the visit. In spring and fall the marsh is especially interesting. This is a good place to bring your camera.
if you haven't explored your local areas for treats like this then you are really missing out! a great day trip for couples, friends or family!
I had the wonderful opportunity to visit the Mentor Marsh and the Nature Center a few days ago. After exploring the nature Center filled with specimens of birds and other wildlife I followed a trail into the woods. I arrived at a few ponds loaded with Spring Peepers and Spotted Salamanders. I plan to come back and get to know this place which is clearly a unique natural spot filled with future wonders for me to discover.
