This is one of the best museums I have ever been too. It is the 2nd oldest in Ohio (began in 1857) and has been in the same location since the mid 1950's. It is so large they actually have displays in two separate buildings. The gun collection is one of the finest ever found in one location. The Native American collection is also one of the largest private collections available to the public. Each of the displays are very well identified and the docents are extremely knowledgeable. Great tour for just about any age!Go to www.firelandsmuseum.org for all the available times, special tours, etc.
If you enjoy small-town museums, you'll like this one. In addition to the history of Norwalk and information about the Firelands, there are a mumber of other exhibits relating to the post- civil war era. The day we visited, a friendly and helpful volunteer showed us around for a while but then let us wander through at our own pace (slow). Unlike many small museums, this one is professionally curated, so the exhibit labels are well-done and the overall layout is logical. The museum is impeccably clean, too. We spent two hours there.
This is a must to visit. Many interesting artifacts to view..rich in history. This is the oldest museum in Ohio. It has a great research facility across the street at the Laning building. Lots of information about the "Firelands".
