I live near Dayton and would pass by the Hall of Fame to tour the Airfare Museum - What a fool I was. Don't pass this up. Great history, space suit for photo op, etc.
If you are a hardware junkie for aviation history, the USAF Museum is the place to go. An amazing collection of aircraft, missiles and other aviation history. Many programs for family and children too.
I find it odd, that this has it's own listing since it's inside the Air Force museum, but this is definitely a hidden treasure. We didn't explore it until recently and I'm glad we did. They have many interactive exhibits and a lot of cool things that I didn't know about. Overall a pretty cool place.
This is inside the National Air Force Museum. ...odd it has its own entry on TripAdvisor. Very cool interactive things for kids...and some history for adults
United states Air force museum. 3 football field size Hangar's with 4th being built. Aircraft from the wright brothers to present day. A lot of artifacts.well worth the visit. Take tour over to the air force base and visit the Presidential Planes Kennedy's 707 and experimental aircraft.
A DISMAL AND DREARY DAY IN OCTOBERWe had been to the USAF Museum several times and decided we'd try something new in Dayton, so we looked up "Things to Do" and found this. Well, I didn't get the address, since I figured there would be big Brown History/Culture Signs along the highway to guide us. Well, I was right - but this was, of course, part of the USAF Museum we'd not ventured into before.Still, we spent over an hour, enjoying the hands-on exhibits, watching the documentaries, and reading the bios on many of the famous inductees: Rickenbacker, Wright, Fokker, Boeing, Glenn, Earhart, Sperry, and the like...Also, the exhibits were not bogged down in historical facts, but written more like true bios - like you'd find on the Biography Channel or a good NatGeo special. We spent about 90 minutes there alone, because we'd seen most of the Museum itself. Still, if you make a trip to the Museum, you should definitely take the time to stop here, too.
This place is fantastic!! Not only shows the history of aviation, but has numerous other displays. You could spend a week and probably not see everything. Definitely a must on any trip to Dayton!!
This museum is inside the Museum of the Air Force at WPAFB. It is free. It is also a stop on the Aviation Trail (get your free passport at the Museum's information desk and have it stamped here. You need 7 stamps to get a Wilbear Teddy Bear.)Excellent displays about aviation and plaques honoring HoF members. Don't miss the chance for a photo in a space suit, either!
I have to admit it was not my idea to go to this museum. My husband and son, both being mechanical engineers, wanted to go. I decided to tag along at the last minute. I am so happy that I did! This place is a real gem with a wonderful staff-- many of them volunteers! It doesn't matter what your aviation interest level is, there is something for everyone. We took the advice from others on TripAdvisor and arrived at the 9:00 AM opening so we were able to be on the first bus tour going to see the Presidential aircraft collection. That was a highlight. You need to have government issued ID, a driver's license is fine, to get on the tour. They only take about 40 people per trip (which is why you need to be there early to get one the list for that day,) and that makes it nice when you are touring the former Air Force One planes. You are able to really look since it's not crowded. There are also some experimental aircraft in that hanger-- the children like seeing the "flying saucer". One hint: when you arrive in the lobby area, get in the security line. Do not stop at the information booth because that is not where you get in line for the Presidential aircraft tour. You go on in through the gift shop, take the first left and you will see the desk. It's across from the Bob Hope exhibit. Once you return from the tour, it is suggested that in order to see all the aircraft you should head to the far back hanger section called "the Cold War" and work your way froward. That seems to work for most people. Before doing that, we got an early lunch at their cafe which is up a flight of stairs (or you can use the elevator) right beyond the gift shop. The stairway is slightly hidden behind some mannikins wearing military uniforms. It was a very good cafe. Better than most you find in museums with a "captive audience". It had everything from salads to cold or hot sandwiches. There were even hot items like chicken wings or strips and chili. After lunch we separated so the engineers could examine everything in detail while I could do an overview walk through. That's when I stumbled onto my favorite thing there. In the very back of a room about half way through the hangers, dedicated to the Aviation Hall of Fame, there was a video playing. It featured a dozen or so of the Apollo astronauts being interviewed all together. It was over an hour long but so very worth the time. They were telling stories about their experiences in space that I had never heard before and you could tell they were having a good time together. This was such an unexpected pleasure. When touring the aircraft collection you will be impressed and amazed by it's scope and size. The different eras are placed together which works very well. To do this museum justice takes most of the day so plan accordingly. It's really fascinating!
Very well organized, educational for all ages. Charts, pictures, descriptions, staff, information is all available. Very friendly and the food court is excellent.
This is part of a bigger must see museum. If you have time it is a good little side trip but not a main attraction the Aircraft in the adjoining museum.
Contained within the USAF Museum, this attraction highlights the aviation achievements of the greatest military and civilian aviators. The area is well laid out with simulators adding to the attraction. Worth looking in on.
Liked the recognition given to so many who added to the significance of aviation plus the hands on displays which the grandkids really enjoyed
This is inside the Air force museum, not sure why it is listed separately. very good if you're into the people behind the planes.
The Hall of Fame is housed inside the Air Force Museum. It had some interactive things for the kids to do, such as a mock up of an air traffic control tower. A space suit where you can take pictures. Interesting!
