South Ona Beach has a large, sheltered parking lot and picnic area, with good blackberry and thimbleberry picking in season. The restrooms have flush toilets and fresh water as well as changing rooms for the beach. This area is connected via a foot bridge over the creek to the expansive sand beach and beach cliffs. The entire area is excellet hunting for rock hounds (primarily jaspers and agates) and fossil collectors (mostly Pleistocene bivalves and gastropods). Surf perch fishing is excellent here, and you can spot some marine tidepool invertebrates around the cliffs at the south end of the park. Dogs can drink fresh water from the river or any of the smaller creeks flowing into the ocean at the park. We love Ona Beach - it has it all!Toll Free: 800-551-6949
We nearly had this beach to ourselves on a recent vacation. Enjoyed looking for agates along the edge of the creek as it flows into the ocean. Beautiful beach with easy access from several trails. Lots of picnic areas that would accommodate large family groups as well as offering privacy for smaller groups. Restrooms were large and include space for changing into beach attire. Definitely worth the stop and if we lived in the area we would return often.
Long walk but nearly flat with no stairs nor inclines to the water. Not many areas in this part of the coast that have that.
Big lawn for picnics can accommodate >100 people easily. Restrooms adjacent. Nice wide beach (especially at low tide) is great for kite flying and running your dog. Fossils and agates easy to find esp. after winter storms. Beaver Cr. is great for canoeing or kayaking. New natural area up Beaver Cr. has good hikes (some steep parts) the park is actively extending the trail system. Plans are afoot to create camping and yet more trails.
We are so lucky to have so many State Parks along the coast. This beach is not only beautiful but also has a creek and many picnic tables. Watch for the bald eagle that hangs around. Easy access and a lot of parking. Look for treasures on the beach!
This easy to get to park is half way between Newport and Waldport. The park on the west side of 101 is the beach with nice walks, picnic areas and lots of sea life. The east side provides a ramp for your kayak to go up Beaver Creek. One mile up the road is a small park with nice views and good hikes. Lots of bird life (eagles, osprey, egrets).
Ona Beach State Park is one of the nicest parks in the Newport area. There are a lot of picnic tables. Some are very near the parking area and others are quite a ways away, somewhat hidden from view. There are several picnic tables with grills for a great barbecue! The restrooms are very nice - with running water! The beach is a little bit of a walk, but there is a paved trail that goes over a bridge that spans Beaver Creek that is pretty. My 90 year old mother could even walk the path. Pulling out of the parking lots going north can take some time, especially in the summer.
This is a nice beach and easy access. We were lucky and found orange agates (2). There's also lots of jasper. Allow time to walk or sit and soak it in. Parkings not bad. Watch pulling out onto the pacific hwy. Locals drive fast and impatient. Good ran or shine. We had both.
Ona Beach is a very popular park in the summer, especially on weekends. I live nearby and enjoy stopping in here from time to time. There is a fairly large parking area but no pull-thru RV spaces. If you are towing a trailer or have a motorhome with a tow car, you can park on the perimeter near the highway and that should work okay. This park has lots of mature trees, and you walk along paved footpaths to the ocean, so it's sort of like walking through a "real" forest. There is a cute arched wooden bridge that crosses Beaver Creek as you get nearer to the beach. Once there, if you walk around to the north, the creek is wide with smooth edges and it's a nice place for young children to safely dip their toes in the water without fear of any waves. Dogs have fun there too :-)There are about 20 to 30 picnic tables scattered around on the grass with some of them under the trees. Some of the tables have a view of the creek. I did notice some traffic noise from the nearby highway, but it's not too intrusive.Restrooms are large and clean. Other than the sandy beach, everything in this park is handicapped accessible and there is no charge for parking.
Lots of Oregon blues and orange agates. Plenty of Jasper and some Jade. Bring your shovels and pales too. Oh and a cooler and lunch. Theres nothing real close by. There are facilities near the parking lot and its a beautiful stroll through the forest to the beach. Come at low-tide
Lovely little park that is probably often overlooked. The beach is a bit of a walk from the parking lot, but you meander through the pretty park and pop out on a rocky beach. Lovely place to let the mutts go wild.
I may be prejudiced because I can see Ona Beach from my living room, but this park has nice, wind-sheltered (most of the time) picnic areas, and a short walk along Beaver Creek and across an arched foot bridge puts you on a sandy beach that offers a nice 1.5 mile stretch of sand that ends at a rock outcrop in Seal Rock. If you are looking for a longer walk, stay north of the creek and you can walk a sandy beach all the way to Newport, 7+ miles to the north. Know your tides before you go walking on Oreegon beaches.
