My kids love airplanes, so we always stop buy to run around the airplanes (B-52 and SR-71 their favorites). They know every one of them. Inside of the museum is for older kids and adults. You have to have access to Edwards AFB, CA to see the museum.
The easiest way to tour the Air Force Flight Test Museum is to book one of the free tours on Edwards AFB. They are offered twice a month, as of September once a month. Some planning is needed, tours are mostly booked about 6 to 8 weeks in advance. The tour is well worth taking, since it not only includes the Air Force Flight Test Museum, where you spend more than an hour, but also takes you all over Edwards AFB.The museum itself explains the development and the unique features of Edwards, also pointing out some of the most important achievements during test flights on Edwards. Since it is all about research, experiments and tests, you will see and learn about some very unique aircraft. The museum itself is home only to one plane, all other exhibits are scale models or parts. Outside the museum there are about 15 aircraft parked. The museum's restoration hangar hosts a few very interesting planes in different stages of restoration. The hangar is some miles away from the museum though. You will probably only see it if on a AFB tour. We toured it, but I am not sure if the museum's hangar is a regular stop for the AFB tour. The museum is planned to be relocated just outside the AFB entrance. It will probably take a few years though.
It is a small little thing with no fee, but it is pretty interesting. Outside, there are several planes, including the SR71. Once inside, there are planes in every direction! What I found most interesting was a wall that was filled with models of planes that were flown and/or developed there. Some of them you would never think were planes! I had never known that aviation had such a rich and detailed history until I did visit here.
