This is a famous landmark mansion where the Kimberly family lived in the early days of Redlands. Enter thru the private drive and it will take you up to the garden area. Tours are given during the week but it may be closed on Wed. Located next door to Prospect Park which is a wonderful day trip in itself. Great views of the valley and there is even a Shakespeare theater in the center of the park.
Walking through the gardens and up to the house, I felt like I was walking into the past. I could imagine a garden party on the grounds. I enjoyed hearing about Redlands' past and the family who lived here. The gardens are lovely with a fountain that I liked sitting on the edge of.
We came with friends and were not disappointed. ASK FOR NOLA TO BE YOUR DOCENT. She was there, as we were, on a rainy day and spent more time with us than she probably was supposed to. As a result, we were captivated by the house and her extensive knowledge of the property and families who lived here before it was given to the town of Redlands. We only saw the house and interiors (too cold and rainy for the gardens) but the house is beautifully decorated for the holidays and it was simply stunning. Only an hour from Palm Springs, it's worth the drive if you're a history buff and lover of historic old homes like I am. This one was given to the town 'as is with every personal item, piece of furniture and decoration' intact. That deliberate act by the woman who donated the house (Mary Kimberly Shirk, of the Kimberly Clark manufacturing empire), is why it is so special. Even the Christmas decorations in the library were hers. We all really enjoyed our visit!
I especially love old houses and I love this one. Since it is owned by the City of Redlands it is a museum and open to the public. Check their website for days and hours of operation. It is also available for private weddings. It's charming, the gardens are well kept and definitely worth the trip to see it. We walk around the groves, enjoy the charm and beauty. It's like being transported back in time. While the staff is knowledgeable, they aren't very friendly and it makes the tour a bit uncomfortable. If you love old homes, you'll adore this one.
Just a drive-by this time with a quick overview of the gardens from the gate. The nearby area has a lot of period homes on pleasant lots with the old architectures of the times.Quiet stone lined streets, many rather wide for this day in age. Refreshing to meander along without a lot of traffic, at least during non-rush hour. The University is the town is a nice story to see as well. The place is not a lot different in the area of this attraction then it was five decades ago when I lived there. Winter snow on the mountains is a treat to see.
Lovely garden and interesting history of the original family. The house is elegant and reminiscent of a small castle, complete with a large cascading pond, gazebos, carriage house. Lovely and romantic place to stroll and/or to get married.
The Tiffany glass is amazing--cool place to visit! There's a real sense of history here. The gardens are beautiful too.
Beautiful Italian gardens....lots of great activities going on there during the year. Great place to visit!
This is a beautifully restored mansion that gives you a glance into the days when the railroad stopped here and people from the east built their winter mansions.... Guess that was before taxes....lol
Beautiful old mansion with beautiful gardens and grounds. Love to take pictures of family and friends here! Interesting history too!
A great place to walk and enjoy an earlier time in history. I have attended many events there and the surrounding are, great venue.
