The seafood was fresh; displayed on beds of crushed ice. The smoked salmon was packaged - which you can get in any of the local grocery stores.
right off the boat fresh fish, all kinds depending on the season, knowledgeable and friendly staff, and good fish tacos!! what more could you want?
I go here often to check and see what the fresh catch of the day. I also go here to get bait for crabbing. I love the fresh seafood, their helpfulness, suggestions for cooking should I need. The best so far!
Horrible shipping experience with spoiled fish--paid over $360 and was only reimbursed for one piece of halibut that the customer management person acknowledged "may not have been as fresh as the others." The fish (front half of halibut, 1 coho salmon, 5 sardines, a few rainbow trout) was shipped with only 4 gel packs that were no longer cold or frozen upon arrival. 3/4 of each of the gel packs were warm and liquid. Who knows how long this package was in the temperature danger zone!In my experience in the culinary industry even three pounds of fresh pasta shipped deserves 2 gel packs. 4 gel packs doesn't seem to cut it. No ice at all to cover the fish. I was mortified. The recipients are fishermen and professionals in medicine and law. They are also family members whom I was trying to thank with a gift they would appreciate. When I called to ask about the package, they were trying to be polite and only mentioned the spoilage of the halibut, because they thought that I had personally caught some of the other fish. They know fresh fish because they both grew up by the ocean eating fresh fish. They also know deteriorating flesh. What was sent either wasn't fresh, or spoiled because of poor packaging, shipping, and handling. The husband recipient's gut instinct as a fisherman with 65 years of ocean and Great Lakes fishing experience was that the fish was not fresh when sent. Most of the people who work at Key City Fish Co. are very friendly and well-informed, but there is one guy there with major anger issues. For an example, see the transcribed recollection of dialogue (written in present tense to separate it from the review ):Customer Service guy grabs a piece of halibut throws it down onto a counter before we have gone over to the case with him to select the piece we want.We ask, "Do you mind putting that piece back for this one here? We want thicker cuts." Customer Service guy says, "They're all the same!!" With a snarl and contempt and disgust in his voice, he storms back to the case to slap down the first piece and rips the piece we want off the stack of fillets. He seems to half-breathe and half-grunt like a teenager who has been put out by being told to clean his room. He seems upset about being asked to do something, because every request sounds like an order, a loss of his freedom. We assume he is just having a bad day and express that we hope that things get better for him, and he responds with a glare, "You don't know my fate, lady." His depth of anger is so palpable that it shakes us up a little and nearly throws us off our relaxed vacation mindset. We almost thought twice about shopping there again, but we kept in mind that one of the other sales reps was so nice that we went back to place a shipping order. We just did not expect this anger, because in general, Port Townsend has such a friendly and warm community. We had also had so many other positive experiences with other people at Key City Fish Co.I work in the culinary industry and have never seen worse customer service or more demonstrated anger in a person who faces customers regularly. Usually restaurants hide these guys in the back, but not here. When we mentioned the poor service, the nice sales rep acknowledged that the customer service guy had issues that didn't excuse the situation, but that he was young and essentially, his behavior was not likely to change.Eat the fresh fish served in the Tacos to Go shop next to the retail store--the shipwrights and other boatsmen know fresh fish, so the tacos are great. If you are going to buy fish and don't want to subject yourself to a chance encounter with an angry young man while on a happy vacation, then buy Cape Cleare salmon instead at the Farmer's market. We enjoyed that much more than the fresh halibut we bought from the angry young man because it had fresh flavor and was attitude-free. Cape Cleare salmon is flash frozen and the people there are very friendly. Also, buy from seafood from the Crab Shack from Leonard in Sequim which is not far off from Port Townsend.
You want fast food other than the reg stuff in most towns... Get a cartoon of fresh hot chowder here. It is excellent. Want some great fish tacos , burritos , at a laid back place with a few picnic tables...go here. This is where locals go ...on the run ..take it with you. On a cold day there is nothing better than their fish chowder in a to-go carton .This is also THE place to get fresh local fish to take home . Salmon , cod , halibut , steelhead, live crabs, etc. Usually have 3 kinds of local clams and mussels too. Can pack your fish to go in ice . This is THE wholesale/retail fish supplier to the locals and many restaurants , and many other businesses. These guys/gals know what they are doing .They also carry fresh locally raised beef , chicken, lamb, pork, etc. Fresh made sausages . yes they have salmon bellys and halibut cheeks as available .They carry some wines , some local beers, and some cooking ingredients to prepare your own food on your boat or at home . They have a chef who works there too , if he is there when you are , who can tell you how to cook what you buy !And they have fresh lemons and limes so you won't get scurvy !
Enjoyable little fish spot, they have a great amount of fresh and smoked fish and shellfish. We didn't have a kitchen so we go some salmon bellies which were incredible.
