If you don't want a dive and you're tired of grime and grunge and you've heard enough head banging music to last a while, slip into this rather calm and sophisticated destination where the mixologist puts a polish on every drink. This place is casually elegant and a favorite with locals and visitors alike. It feels like it's been here since 1921 (not so) and since it is located in the traditional old town section of Vancouver, you can imagine yourself in a timeless zone while you are here. It is very well put together and offers live music occasionally. The kind of music you generally listen to while seated. I've never found Top Shelf to be noisy and full of early twenty-somethings talking really loud. It appeals to a more mature crowd that enjoys the good life, with maybe some Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett in the background in small doses, on occasion. But it is not a nostalgic throw-back martini bar. It is in the Here and Now, and the drinks small plates are contemporary, creative, and cutting-edge.
Visited Top Shelf for the first time on Friday and really enjoyed it. Seems like a lot of regulars are there but felt comfortable. Friendly (think Cheers). Had 1 or 2 too many cilanto martinis which were very good but sneak up on you. Place is cozy and good layout that fits in a lot of people but standing room only by 9ish. Had a nice 3 piece band that prolonged our stay. Would return for a fun evening.
