Its truly unfortunate that this place went belly up some years ago but boy the gems that are hidden there....!!! It is so untouched and simply gorgeous. From the golf grounds to the whole Melrose area. I only spent half a day exploring the island and immediately started planning a mini vacation to stay here for a little. Due to the remote location and how hard it is to get to the island, it is very peaceful. Its amazing to see what mother nature has done to the island and how the inhabitants combat her force. If you ever get the chance, I fully recommend you get yourself over there.
My brothers and I take a golf vacation together each year. Usually to Orlando or Hilton Head. Our trip this year was to Hilton Head from 11/15/2014 to 11/22/2014. We played primarily the Heritage Club courses but on our last day we decided to try Melrose on the Beach on Daufuskie Island. We were not disappointed. Our day began with a zodiac raft ride to the island out of Harbor Town. The ride took about fifteen minutes and we were met at the pier by a van to take us and our gear to the golf course. We checked in with Chip, the head pro, and were treated to the best service ever. He explained the course in detail and especially warned us of the blind approach on #9 which is the #1 handicap hole. We basically had the course to ourselves so he let us take as much time as needed at the practice facility which includes free range balls. The layout of the course is superb with every hole being a memorable hole. It is a challenging but fair test of your golf skills and the greens rolled fast and true. Chip met us on the 18th green and took our picture with the Harbor Town Lighthouse in the distance. They then drove us over to the Beach House where we had the best calamari of our lives. The Mojitos were excellent as well. Finally, a van ride back to the pier and another boat trip home at sunset with dolphins showing up near Harbor Town. This may become an annual event for us and Orlando may lose our business - all because of Chip and the tremendous experience we had on the last day of our trip. I urge anyone venturing to Hilton Head for golf to take advantage of this experience. You will not be disappointed and the golf course will have the finances to stay open. A win-win!
I first golfed at Melrose on Daufuskie Island 8 years ago. It was such a memorable event that I couldn't wait to go back on this trip to Hilton Head Island, and I was not disappointed. In fact, it was even better. Yes, you do have to charter a boat to get over - but that's half the fun! We were lucky enough to find May River Excurions (843-304-2878) and Chris took us over early in the morning in time for our tee off and picked us up exactly when we wanted - which happened to be quite a few hours later since we were enjoying the island so much. The staff at Melrose are unsurpassed for friendliness and service; they make you feel welcome from the minute they pick you up at the dock. The new owners have spent a lot getting things back in shape and the course was in excellent condition when we played it in November. The ocean views are still spectacular and the entire course is a pleasure to play. Their Beach Club restaurant has great food and a beautiful setting, so all in all it was probably the best day we spent in Hilton Head. It truly is a hidden gem and not to be missed on your next trip to Hilton Head. We'll be back and I think next time we'll actually spend 3 or 4 days at Melrose in one of their beautiful newly refurbished units. The stay & play package is excellent value; I would highly recommend checking it out!
Just played the back 9 last week. Great people, great golf carts w/loaded GPS that told us distance of our played balls. Beautiful scenery. Course well groomed. Reasonably priced. Let's keep this one a secret!
I just played there last week and am certain I have found another must see experience when bring friends down to HH. The ride over to Daufuskie was great, little rigid hull zodiak with another set of golfers zipped us over in about 15 min with dolphins following us for a good portion of the ride. You are greeted at the dock by a super friendly Melrose staffer who will drive you over to the course. You will instantly feel like you have the course to yourself (we basically did) so the service is essentially one on one. The course is in great shape and is fun and fairly challenging with some blind tee or approach shots. The one thing to note is that the sea-wall on 17 and 18 is indeed damaged but it not at all a factor on 17. On 18, yes the original green was destroyed and the temporary green is just that, but the rest of 18 is just amazing - overall the sea-wall had zero impact on my thoughts of the course. Afterwards we headed over for some good food and drinks at the beach clubI will make sure to take people over here for a unique experience.
We did the back nine with our two teenagers and it was fantastic! Chip was so helpful in setting up all up with clubs and when to golf. A beautiful course- thanks for a great afternoon!
17 and 18 might be in the ocean! It seems the work on repairing the seawall along the last three holes has stopped due to cash flow problems of the latest investment group, as has work on the inn, tennis facility and some of the cottages...but I digress, this review is just about the golf course. I played two rounds here and my other half played three. Daufuskie is a special place and playing Melrose is truly cool. The course is in good shape, plenty of dripping moss, deer, Fox squirrels and alligators to keep you distracted too. I needed the distractions as I took a lot of swings....not the courses fault or my clubs, unfortunately... Also, there is also a great newly refurbished restaurant to have lunch or dinner at either before or after your round of golf. If you stay in one of the open cottages, of which there are several, you can also enjoy the pools...these are redone too and nice. So, play here this year and maybe if the course can really make a comeback then funds will be available to fix that sea wall so Melrose can remain open for many years to come. I know we will come down and play it again...soon!
I played Melrose today, May 13th, and was pleased with the course and new changes to the clubhouse and facilities. We arrived by boat and docked at their dock (which still needs repair), and we were picked up and driven by the pro to the pro shop where we checked in. The pro could not have been more cooperative and welcoming. Green fees with cart cost $50....exceptionally cheap. The course is in fine shape, with the exception of the 18th green which had been washed out some time in the past, but plans are to redo it this year. We played to a temporary green. The holes are interesting and some very scenic along the beach and water. An investor group is pouring lots of money into the facilities and by Sept, 2014, should be in great shape. The only drawback is access to Daufauskie Island is by boat only. It's a beautiful piece of property, not very busy, and quite enjoyable.
The golf course is beautiful. It is currently being renovated but has a lot of potential. 3 holes are along the water. Also I lost my 3 wood and the pro-shop found the golf club and sent it to my house within a few weeks! Greatly appreciated the customer service!
This course is beautiful - the whole island is making a comeback - don't miss out! FABULOUS food at the Melrose Beach Club too!
Unlike the earlier reviews, I am not going to recommend you take a ferry to play the course. I'm going to recommend you take the ferry to be a guest at Melrose and play while you're here. Beach cottages are for rent (check places like VRBO) -- you'll need a golf cart not only to play the course, but to get around this fascinating island. As long as you're here in the latter half of the week, you can take advantage of the Beach Club for lunch and/or dinner. You'll have a delightful meal in a gorgeous setting. Good food, great service, unbeatable views. Can't say much about the course since I don't play -- however, I live here. My cottage backs to the course and I rarely see anyone playing. My cottage faces the ocean and the beach is almost always empty. This is a wonderful place to visit (and live)!
What a great experience. Hop on a boat from Harbor Town Marina at HHI and John is picking you up on the other side in the Melrose Suburban. John is stretched thin but he does a great job making you feel like his top priority. Like others have said, bring snacks and drinks, pack a cooler, bring your beer. Take advantage of this course while you can, the rate is 100% worth it and finishing holes beauty contends with anything in the USA. Course fairways in great shape, better than others on the island, greens are surprisingly true, roughs are rough but stay on the fairway and you'll love it. 20-30 rounds a day you'll feel like you have the course to yourself.
Beautiful golf course, well worth the ferry trip. It is very flat so is easily walkable. Also has a great restaurant and pool. Beach side.
You take a boat to the islland to play this course. Thats we're the adventure begins. You are greeted and transported by the private surbanban from the course and they will answer any questions you have about the island. Although not the best course we played during our trip, definately one of the most memorable. The island is somewhat rustic although the views from the last three holes exquisite. A must do during your trip to hilton head.
Like a middleweight champion down on his luck awaiting money and management Melrose has talent, class and a few rough patches. The Nicklaus design offers some fun choices, great vistas of low country marsh and beach, and 3 great ocean views as you finish your round. Some of the rough spots are endearing. Dave is the welcoming host who does what ever he can for you noting the closed club house, the lack of food and a few course maintenance issues. Of course the biggest maintenance issue involves a missing 18th green. Half the green has fallen into the ocean. This dramatic view, a geomorphologist's dream, means you have to hole out on the temporary green. How many times have you ever gotten do that?So if you want to play a great course almost by yourself, enjoy wonderful hospitality, see what happens to a course when the money goes away, and see a beautiful part of the low country hop the ferry and get out there!
