small park in the town serving as a memorial t veterans. Nice statue and some benches. If in town, worth a check out. Nice to see that little town has this small park.
It’s a shame that this beautiful little park in downtown Newberry goes unnoticed by many (most?) visitors. The town of Newberry doesn’t even list the park as an attraction. What really grabs attention in this part of the town are the many National Register-listed historic structures, especially the Newberry Opera House and the Old Courthouse, the two magnificent buildings adjacent to the park. Memorial Park has two components, a grove-like block located on the Main Street side of the Opera House and a small lawn-like tract behind the Old Courthouse on the other side of McKibben Street. In addition to providing shade and attractive green space, the park has memorials for the Revolutionary, Civil, World, Korean and Vietnamese Wars. The World War memorials in front of the Opera House are the most conspicuous and accessible. No walkways invite visitors to closely approach the Civil, Korean, and Vietnam War Memorials behind the Old Courthouse, but you may want to walk on the lawn and get close enough to read the inscriptions. The Civil War Memorial bears the names of more than 400 honored dead. That’s a lot of casualties from one small community! Just a few steps away, the Korean War Memorial lists 16 and the Vietnam War Memorial lists 21.
