We had a groupon for this winery, otherwise probably would not have stopped in. It turned out to be well worth stopping for. Their wines were quite good; the Meritage was very good and their Crescent Moon, a sweet wine, will make a very good dessert wine. We purchased some of each. Ted, the GM was very accommodating and knows his wines quite well. He and his wife have recently taken over operating responsibility for this vineyard and they should do well and improve with time (just like a fine wine). Check out their website for the cost of the wine tastings; they probably have to charge or they would be full of locals drinking up all the wine. And they do have a small picnic area that could be neat in good weather.
As you drive up the driveway, it feels like you are going back in time... the beautiful live oaks form an archway as though you are entering a plantation... just gorgeous! We enjoyed our tasting, sampling a number of wines we likes, with some great meats and cheeses! The only criticism is the speed of the presentation... a bit too quick. Also, next time visiting we will bring a picnic lunch and take more time to enjoy the grounds. There are picnic and patio areas very conducive to a great, lazy afternoon!
Great wines! Very friendly and knowledgeable personnel. Nice outdoor sipping space. Interesting gifts on display. Worth a side trip. We brought some of the locals with us and they were amazed that this is right on their doorstep. Try it!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stop at September Oaks Winery - extremely friendly; great wines and a must if you like exploring wineries. Highly recommend.
We were driving thru the area and saw the billboard on the interstate. Since we had time we decided to drop in for a visit. Beautiful scenery and a great atmosphere made it a great little pitstop for us. We would highly recommend dropping in when you are in the area.
I live in the area but my mom was in town from NY. We have been before but like to go at least once a year to see what is new! The wine just keeps getting better and so does the staff. Last time I was there to pick up my wine club wine, I wasn't greeted with the warmth that I was this time. Was very nice and got to meet the owner! Makes it that much better!
This was an anniversary gift, and my past experience with regional South Carolina and Georgia wines ranged from kerosene to pancake syrup. The primary indigenous grape, the muscadine, is overwhelmingly sweet and has a unique flavor. I went to September Oaks with the attitude of "How good can this be?" Easy answer: far better than expected. The wine tasting is a linear (dry to fruity white, then dry to fruity red), and our hostess was personable and knowledgeable. The wines do incorporate the local grape, but some had been blended with juices of other varietals (such as chardonnay and pinot grigio), then fermented. Even with their pure muscadine wines, the fruit is not an overwhelming to the taste. They are also experimenting with non-local red grapes grown here.Bottom, line: it's worth the stop for the education. But what makes it worthwhile is that these wines rate among the best of the coastal wines. And whatever you do, call for directions – the Google directions will take you well out of the way.
