We were peering in the door on a Monday, a day they're not open. Luckily, one of the partners was there working on some paperwork. She let us in, and were we ever glad she did. My cousin has raised bees before, and he was impressed with the inventory of this little shop, and the knowledge of the owner. There's also plenty of honey to be purchased with taste tests available. The hot pepper honey (yep, you read that right. . . hot pepper honey) has a delicious combination of tastes. Against her will I took Addy (my almost 7 year old granddaughter) to the Carolina Honey Bee Company after I picked her up at school. I am addicted to the All Natural Beeswax Lip Balm and was out of it. She realized I didn't take her somewhere awful and picked out 3 for herself- she needed them, her lips are chapped. Before long she was talking to the people about how honey is made and the suits the bee keepers had to wear, they showed her how the bees are delivered with the queen in the spring and how they made the honey combs. So the "worst day of her life" turned into a fun, learning experience. They are taking orders now for a queen and her colony, sell everything you need to use it and even have classes. I think it's fun to go and the lip balm works better than anything I've used. Of course the honey is great and she got to see honey in the comb, there are soaps, lotions and body butter. Something for everyone. And they say local honey will help fight off allergies. Travelers Rest is a growing but still quaint town with many interesting shops and a biking trail. It's worth a your time to stop in - you won't regret it!
