Small local theatre. Shows are performed well. Employees are very friendly. Seats are comfortable and well spaced. Free popcorn is provided. There is a bar with a select drink menu (wines, beer, champagne, soda) and candy. Prices at the bar are reasonable. Sodas were $1, tall beer $5, some bottles of wine around $20. Tickets were $20 each. Restroom was clean. Great date night activity in the Vista, so lots of restaurants nearby.
This is a small, private theater that shows plays that are locally produced. Some of them are quite good, others are not. The people running it obviously make an effort for it to be as good an experience as they can. The seats are comfortable and there is a good view of the stage.
Going to Trustus is like going to a show in Soho, NY. It is quaint, has the most comfortable seating and you can take food and\drink to your seat....awesome..not to mention the shows whichrange from somber thought provoking plays to super Musicals with exceptional talent. Trustus is known for doing somethingedgy or different which makes it such an interesting venue.
Casual attire, nice seating, popcorn, alternative plays so not for everyone. Bar catered to beer/wine drinkers. Rotating art exhibits. Very costly is only negative.
Some of my favorite shows here have been: Ain't Misbehavin', Five Lesbians Eating A Quiche, Ragtime, Evil Dead The Musical and Collected Stories. Has a bar featuring great wine and beer selections. Free popcorn at your seat, a great Apprentice program, creative sets and edgy content. Also has playwright competitions, drag shows, improv nights and other fun events!
Trustus Theatre is truly Columbia's gem, as it offers superior quality entertainment that is presented very artfully and could easily compete with any of the big stages on the West End and Broadway. I have asked for Trustus tickets for my birthday and I have received them as a gift for other occasions also, and the mere fact that we have Trustus in Columbia makes me love this city even more. Also, who does not like complementary popcorn?
We began attending Trustus performances shortly after Jim and Kay Thigpen launched the little theater in that humble walkup over on Assembly Street. When they moved to the Vista we eagerly followed. It’s been a pleasure to watch Trustus thrive and add an exciting element of diversity to the city’s community theater scene, which is amazingly good for a city of this size. There’s a lot to like about Trustus’ venue characteristics. It’s well located, cozy-small, intelligently designed, and has decent parking close at hand. The seating is comfortable, and as they say, there’s not a bad seat in the house. This is not to mention free popcorn (with refills) and the option to buy beer and wine. All of this said, we don’t attend Trustus performances very often, and almost never without first reading reviews and checking with theater-going friends. Trustus, a niche theater with a professional cast, specializes in edgy productions -- stuff that’s too risky or risqué for mainstream community theater. That’s great for Columbia, but it’s just not great for us anymore. As we’ve aged we’ve shifted to lighter fare and now prefer to cherry-pick the schedule for comedies and the occasional musical. We did take some visitors from San Francisco to see “Clybourne Park” in February, and while we didn’t much like the play, we enjoyed showing off Trustus, a theater that would be right at home in San Francisco.
Thi theater just cannot produce a play or musical that does not glorify homosexuality and racial guilt. Such a waste of potential. Tonights show was the straw that broke my back and was literally as gross as two boys kissing. Enough! I will not return.
Trustus Theater is a great venue for a play. Talented actors/actresses, all seats have a great view and are comfortable. Bar has a good selection of wine and beer and FREE popcorn. Shouldn't be missed when in Columbia if there is a show scheduled.
Hungry for some NYC off-Broadway entertainment? Look no further than Columbia, SC's Trustus Theatre. I've been going to Trustus for as long as I can remember and very few times have I been disappointed. Trustus always provides a top of the line professional theatre experience from direction all the way to set -- and everything in between. An added bonus is the free popcorn and bar with a nice selection of beer and wine. Then there are the comfy seats! A night at Turstus never fails to entertain.
