Having researched things to do across South Dakota between the Sioux Falls and Fargo, I knew there wasn't a lot, so that meant a stop at South Dakota State University in Brookings was a must. I was very happy to find out that there was an ice cream factory at the University because there's not much better than ice cream straight from the source. It always tastes better than it does from the store. It was a little busy when we went because it was move-in day for students, so the staff was a little overwhelmed and they were out of some flavors. It didn't matter, though, because the ice cream was amazing and worth the wait. It was creamier than most ice creams I had had before, and the flavors were very palatable and didn't hide behind the ice cream itself. If you're ever near Brookings, this is a must stop, and it's pretty easy to find, despite what some reviews might tell you. Google Maps can easily get you there, and Brookings is not very big, so I'm guessing most people can tell you where to go.
Located on the SDSU campus and as fresh from the farm dairy as you can get without owning a farm. If you like ice cream and are in the area, it is a must stop. Great value.
This dairy bar is located on the SDSU campus and is difficult to find. You might have to ask directions. It's worth a stop if you like really great fresh made ice cream. They also sell cheese and other dairy products but be sure you stay long enough to enjoy a dish of their ice-cream or an ice cream cone.
the SDSU dairy bar has been operating since at least when my parents were in college there in the late 50s/early 60s. And I remember going to this place as early as the late 60s. It continues to have some of the best ice cream I've ever had. When we visit family once a year or so now, we always go, it's a destination. Truly a "historic" place in Brookings, a place to make many family memories. The portions are huge, the prices are ridiculously low.
Pros: Ice cream was delicious, and you get fantastic portions for the money. Right near South Dakota Art Museum and the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum.Cons: None.
We were exploring the state of South Dakota in June of 2008 (the date above was the earliest date available to post from) Our first night, we stopped in Brookings, a small university town that was very charming and clean. when we checked into our hotel, we asked the front desk what kinds of attractions there were in Brookings that we just couldn't miss. Without missing a beat she replied, "Dairy Bar, across town on the South Dakota State University campus". So we drove across town (really only a few minutes away) and found the Dairy Bar. This little shop also sells cheese made from milk obtained from the herd of milk cows owned by the University. The "Farm" owned by the University and ran by Agriculture students raises cows for the educational experience, and uses the milk from the cows to supply the college cafeteria and to make cheese and ice cream. I had butter brickle while my kids had strawberry cheesecake, chocolate and mint chocolate chip. This is worth the 8 hour drive but I really wish there was a way I could have brought some home.
