I liked the memorial and took pictures all around. Neat in its purpose for commemorating the men who died in the crash.
This sculpture is very beautiful and exceptionally detailed. It was sculpted by Korczak Ziolkowski who started Crazy Horse memorial near Custer, South Dakota. I hope that Crazy Horse will be completed in my lifetime, but it is doubtful. T. Denny Sanford gave Crazy Horse $10 Million to complete the horse's head. I hope that gets done in the next few years.
The sculpture was very impressive for it's detail. The setting was lovely. Learned something new from the story behind it.
Very dramatic sculpture by Korczak Ziolkowski, who was the designer of the in-process still Crazy Horse Memorial. The design and execution are exceptional. I wasn't aware of its history, but was still moved by its power. It captures the fighting spirit of the west, a fierceness and determination. Well worth some moments of contemplation and admiration..
Yeah, it is cool but serves no purpose except end up in Al and I's promotional video of Pierre. Here is some more text in order to be over 100 characters.
As you will be visiting the South Dakota Capitol, do not miss this very nice statue of 2 fighting stallions, carved by Korczak Ziolkowski, one of the 2 great sculptors that worked in SD, the other being of course Gutzon Borglum who carved Mt Rushmore. Ziolkowski is especially known for designing, planning and starting (until his death) the carving work on Crazy Horse Memorial. The Fighting Stallions Memorial stands on the ground of the South Dakota State House in honor of Governor George S. Mickelson who died in a plane crash along with 7 other people.
Nice statue but not a lot of explanation as to why these individuals were chosen to be honored
We just returned from South Dakota where we saw the Fighting Horses, Crazy Horse & Mt. Rushmore. Ben 0844 has the information wrong: The Fighting Horses was created by Korczak Ziolkowski who spent half his life working on Crazy Horse, NOT Mt. Rushmore. Mt. Rushmore was sculpted by Gutzon Borglum.
Located on the Capitol Grounds off Capitol Lake, this statue was built in memory of Governor George Mickelson and several other important South Dakota men who died in a tragic airplane accident in 1993. This is a beautiful statue of stallions fighting fiercely and bravely.
I grew up in Pierre and remember distinctly when they built this. I was there for the memorial and sang with the Capitol City Children's Chorus to remember the former governor. I think it is beautiful and enjoy sitting by it. They put up some nice flower displays around it too along with the Capitol Lake right next to it. I enjoy it.
