James Dean (1931-1955) is buried in Park Cemetery in Fairmount, Indiana, less than a mile from where he grew up on his aunt and uncle's farm, The Winslow Farm. Park Cemetery, while known for the final resting place of the young actor James Dean, it is also the home of a Veteran's Memorial, provided by local businesses. This cemetery is private. The headstone you see at James Dean's grave is not the original headstone. The original headstone was stolen twice and was not recovered the second time. Thieves stole the present headstone once but it was successfully recovered. The town of Fairmount attracts many visitors seeking out Dean's gravesite, the old Fairmount High School, as well as the Fairmount Historical Museum, which also has a collection of James Dean memorabilia.
Park Cemetery is a beautiful, rolling, tree-shaded spot on the outskirts of Fairmount, Indiana. James Dean is buried there, with the way to his grave well-marked. You can sit and contemplate as long as you like, or until Sundown. You can leave a stone on the top of his monument to show you were there. You can talk to his spirit and tell him why you love him. Take pictures. Imagine the stories of the people buried near him. Listen to the birds sing, or the cows lowing. If you bring a picnic, remove all the scraps when you leave. This will be an experience you will long remember. (Don't confuse the Park with the small cemetery outside Back Creek Friends Church, a few feet up the road.)
The bigger the fan of James Dean you are, the more you will get out of visiting his grave. I was driving through the area, so it wasn't a huge journey to get there - but even still, Fairmount is pretty far from much else. It is impressive to think that a huge American icon comes from such a small Midwestern town - that's the memory that stays with me from the visit.
James Dean, a hometown boy, is buried here. You must stop to see all the strange and weird items left on his headstone. Bizarre adoration!
Tranquil and peaceful place just down the road from the Winslow farm and the old Motorcycle club where James Dean used to hang out.
Very easy to find. Visited by many. Nice old cemetery.
La tombe est facile à trouver car un écriteau indique où elle se trouve. A la gauche de la tombe, le père et la belle-mère de James Dean et à droite les oncles et tante de James Dean.
