Taltree is a hidden gem in Porter County. The trails are beautiful, gardens are amazing and the model train depot is spectacular. Membership is the way to go because you will want to keep coming back.
The arboretum is a nice place but much less developed than many. Other than a nice place to walk, there is little to recommend EXCEPT for the train exhibit. There is a large area devoted to model railroading and it is very good. I'm not sure why this is at an arboretum but it is very well done and entertaining.
We went on our off days during the week to see the property and walk the trails. We happened to have free passes from friends of ours, but it is only a $7 entry fee (now $10)-they also have specials for seniors, college students, and kids. I wouldn't say it was the most amazing nature trip that we went to, but it was a nice escape for a couple hours. We didn't see much wildlife, but we had the property mostly to ourselves. It was neat to see the model train exhibit and the fairy house exhibition that they had on display. Lots of little trails-some better than others! We really enjoyed the cardinal trail the best, then the heron and owl trails, and were not in love with the bluebird trail-which was all prairie on a very hot day! Bring a lunch, lots of water, and good walking shoes/comfortable clothes and you can easily do all of the trails in a few hours (about 4 miles).
Visited with a friend and enjoyed the model railroad town as well as walking some of the pathways. Lovely, untouched prairie country. I'll be back.
Went on a cold October day with my Grandson to see the trains and it was a lot of fun. The train park is very well laid out and they had many trains running for him to chase around the park. The volunteer staff was very kind and patient with all my questions.
We love Taltree Arboretum. We take our dog for long walks on the property. Gardens, trees, paths, and of course, the railroad is awesome.
Very pretty grounds...a little pricey to get in , but everything well kept. The scarecrow contest is cute.
Loved and peace-and-quiet of a nature walk, shared in a seperate garden with the child-like excitement of massive layout of miniature trains and more stunning scenery. Checkout their website.
Spent an afternoon at Taltree Arboretum and Gardens. It was a most delightful surprise. The railroad and miniature plant exhibit is extremely well done and very interesting. A great place to take the kids. I would highly recommend it.
Started our anniversary weekend here -- the railroad exhibit was awesome - and the staff (our train operator and a volunteer/board member) were so informative about the creation of this huge operating train exhibit
Taltree Arboretum and Gardens has the largest public railroad garden in the Midwest. It truly is a gem in the prairie. While it is not located in town, it makes up for the drive by it's beauty. I can say that with a doubt I more than a couple of ideas back home for my railroad. The railroad garden is fully accessible, the concrete paths are great. If you have children, this is a must stop if our traveling on I-80,I-90,I-94. Just slip down and visit. I lost count of the number of bridges on the layout.
