I will say the real exhibits have moved out of this building but it is the most identifiable structure with the Smithsonian name. It addition the "Castle" as it is known is an impressive structure on the Mall. Great for pictures.
You can start your tour here and plan the rest of the museums. We stopped here at the end of our trip and happened to picked up a brochure that discussed a new service being offered for transportation via the Circular around the mall to the Smithsonian Museums. It only costs $1 per person as of March 2015 and I’m sure it will be more efficient if you are interested in the museums and monuments around the National Mall. This service is also discussed in the Visitor Survival Guide offered on the Smithsonian Institute Website under Tips for visiting.
Went to the Air and Space and American History Museums. Both were terrific. Such amazing institutions offered free! Wished we had time for more.
just a great place what can be said about the mecca of history and its collectionstoo good and very educative
Not much to see here, perfect for a quick visit as you stroll down the Mall. I actually think this place is one of the best "bathroom break" locations as you are walking down the mall or want a break from the heat in summer time.
We found restrooms, food, and a place to warm-up. The displays are interesting for a quick perusal. The building has its own beauty.
It was a great experience that was cut short by my brief trip to D.C. for a conference. I wanted to see more exhibits, but only made it to the native american/indigenous people section which I enjoyed. The drum circle that was performing when I arrived did an excellent job, and seemed to be connected to their tribes culture.
A significant part was closed for renovations/preparing for new exhibits, but still enjoyable. Lots of cool transportation, military, sound recording and food exhibits. And of course, seeing the "Star Spangled Banner" is a "must see." That was about the only place in the whole Museum where photos weren't allowed to be taken. (Perfectly understand why.)
