This is a massive mansion restored to the period it was built. So it's worth the tour alone to see the house. I also appreciated the short film in the carriage house. The film gave a great historical overview of Atchison.
The docents are well-informed and chatty, and will take you on a tour of the house. The video tells the history of the house and of Atchison, and you wont' want to miss it.
This home was also donated for the public to enjoy, It is pretty much like the Muchnic Home. It also had the carved woodwork around the doors. The furniture was of that period and very beautiful. Everything in the house was very ornate. It also had unique looking fireplaces, but the front and back did not match. If I remember correctly, I believe the wife had been to Scotland and wanted the home to look like a castle. The home is made to look like a three story castle. There is also a small house behind it which is a gift store. There is also a woman who shows you a 10-20 minute movie on the different types of architecture in Atchison, KSThere is a $3.00 charge to tour the 15 room home.
It only cost 3 $ to take the tour, very cool and unusual building with the castle like appearance it cost 8,000 $ to build and cost 8,000$ to have the turrets added , neat old mansion with period furniture and old elevator .
We had a lovely tour of the Cray Mansion. Our tour guide, was very knowledgeable about the home's history. . Well worth the time to stop.
This house is worth the driving trip to Atchison by itself --- a wonderful, late 1800s three-story mansion located just a few blocks 'up the hill' from the main highway through downtown Atchison. The outside architecture is fantastic: the turret addition, drive-through portico, brick drive with rut-impressions from carriages....everything.Our tour guide was outstanding! If you are a fan of historic and well-kept mansion homes and are nearby Atchison, KS, this one is a must see :) Not only are things in great condition, but you'll also love the intricate woodwork (especially inside the turret on the main level) and the many time period artifacts throughout the house. Not to give anything away, but my absolute favorite has to do with the circus and is on the upper level :) There is a small gift shop and short video about the history of Atchison in the carriage house too.
