Having recently emigrated to the area, I had no idea this place existed. While searching for movie deals on Groupon, this place came up with 2 tix with 2 popcorns for $15! You can't even get one tix for that at the chains. It offers a mix of first runs and indies (we watched Unbroken) This place is cool. It's like walking into a time warp to 1955. Old movie posters, the decor and even a robot statue from some bygone thriller adorn the lobby. The theaters are smaller, maybe 50 seats or so, as are the screens, but they are nice. It's a unique experience for us as all we've ever known of theaters is the 16 screen megaplex style. Popcorn was great. We will be back, because I loaded up on the Groupons!
Quaint and not crowded. A breeze of a location, and easy parking. If it's not playing at the Fine Arts Theatre, the movie is just not worth seeing.
The seats are comfy with cup holders and recline. The sound is very good, so good that sometimes you can hear the music from the theater space next to yours. A little dated but clean and nice. We recommend.
Personally love the Glenwood and Rio theaters that are part of this group. The owners are great and it has an old time movie theater feel. Other than a place up North, this is the only place to see fine independent and foreign films. The theaters have various sizes of auditoriums to feature films. Typically the theaters aren't full so you can enjoy the movies since most of the crowd are older and not obsessed with their cell phones. They actually go to the movie to enjoy essence of film making. They also sponsor a monthly film group discussion on various movies selected to be seen the next month. At great costs to the owners, these theaters were recently ungraded to show HD quality movies and screens. It is unfortunate that the Glenwood may lose their location because of a group that has bought Shawnee Mission South Mall and wants to tear it down. It's fate may be in the hands of people that love independent films.
love to watch a movie at one of the Fine Arts Theatre. As an adult you can lean back in a comfy seat and really enjoy your movie...no crowd, ....it's a little bit like a set back in history.
Single theater "throwback" to another era. It's pleasant to take in movies without the multiplex crowds. Theater operators also have the RIO, Leawood, Glenwood, and Red Bridge theaters. They try to make the experience more like the 1950's, 60's when going to the movies tended to be a "special occasion." Good current movies, sometimes foreign films, sometimes independent films, but the genre doesn't matter. It's always a good time.
My husband and I went to this theater for the first time this past weekend. We like to support the arts and are thrilled to find several little arts theaters being restored in the city. The seats aren't as comfortable as the big fancy theaters, but the overall experience is so much nicer. We are probably part of the younger crowd there, but we generally enjoy that anyway. The staff was extremely nice and we even talked to several of the other moviegoers. A great place to go if you don't need the gigantic theater and sound system experience.
Always try to go here as locally owned and a good experience. Very friendly service. Fantastic popcorn. Good selection of candy. Several theaters of different size. Major films in the large auditorium with less popular on the smaller screens and smaller venues. Thinking persons theatre, no car chases and teenage drivel. If it requires a brain to see, it will be playing here. If attending one of the less popular movies, or art movie arrive early as those theaters are small with limited seating.
Reasonable ticket prices, great movie selections, home to smaller but well done films, popcorn good as well. Our theater of choice unless we want the big screen, killer sound experience.
parking is easy at all 4 locations, i love the old style theatre feel instead of the big chain movie theatre. the best popcorn hands down...amazing! friendly staff, clean and easy to get a seat last minute
Small theatre, homey and fun. We love it so much we rarely go anywhere else. No big fancy sound system - we don't care. Sounds great to us.
