This is an open, in situ, archaeological site! It isn't very big, but if you take the time truly observe what it is there, it is fascinating. The curator is a wealth of knowledge about all things relating to the site, and similar sites in the region. It isn't close to anything, but if you are a student of history, or archaeology or even anthropology you will find it well worth a visit.
While visiting my brother in Kansas, he suggested that we take a ride to visit this museum. Said it was well worth the trip (2 hr. ride) from his house. The very knowledgeable curator of the museum is Richard and he walked us through the exhibit while telling us the story of a Pawnee village that may have existed in the 1700's. The exhibits surround themselves around the excavated floor of a large Pawnee earth lodge. I learned more about the Pawnee's that day than I ever thought I would. I am a city girl, but enjoyed this visit so much that we took more time than was probably needed in order to absorb everything and take it all in. You are allowed to take all the pictures you want, except for the Sacred Bundle. We found a little restaurant in the tiny town of Republic called The Dinner Bell where they serve wonderful sandwiches and is a great place to visit.
