My wife and I moved to Annville for it's college town appeal. And MJ's brings together so many of the elements of life here that we love. It's a great place to meet friends, grab a GOOD cup of coffee, work for a while (free WiFi), and to eat tasty, freshly prepared meals. I love the outdoor seating in nice weather - my wife and i walk our dog through town, and often stop there for an iced coffee on our way home. The movie theatre has great quality sound and comfortable seating. We often get live entertainment theatre organ, violin, etc before the show. Movie selection changes slowly but choices are always worth watching. Special events include jazz nights, silent film festivals, and more, all worth attending. The owner Skip and his wife are very friendly and great contributors to our little town's enviable quality of life
They have EXCELLENT hot chocolate and tea. However, I ordered a sandwich and while it was absolutely delicious, it took almost 40 minutes. Good food and fun times during open mic but I now eat before I come here.
This is a must see. Great food and great fun. We will return for sure. Like stepping back in time but all modern. We highly recommend checking this place out.
This is what a movie theatre experience should be like. With a coffee house out front, you can arrive early for something to eat. The nostalgic atmosphere makes you feel like a kid again. Sometimes they even show silent films with musical accompaniment. The staff has a welcoming word for each guest. It shows that they really appreciate your attendance. It's a far cry from the "herd them in, herd them out " attitudes of the multi-plex theatres.
Most recently I stopped in with a friend for a quick bite to eat. She ordered the special panini and ordered what I always get... The mozzarella melt which I ask them to panini press. Wonderful as always. I have gone on Saturday or Sunday afternoons with my laptop and ordered various pots of tea. It's CASH only and the ATM on site is slow. It's better to come with cash already in hand. The movie feature is well-selected and many times rated only PG or PG-13. I do care what both myself and friends are subject to at the movies so I appreciate this theatre playing quality movies.
This theater is owned by Skip Hicks who really enjoys running it. He usually gives you a personal welcome and may have live music prior to the show. No ads for the concession stand. The prices are reasonable. There is MJ's Coffee House adjacent to the theater.
Going to MJ's to eat and then the Allen Theater for a show is always a treat. You never go wrong.Catch a quick sandwich and soup or a larger meal too. It is all good. The ambience is charming too. It is not your norman theater experience.
My husband and I think the Allen Theater is the best place to go to see a current run movie for a date night. Why? Because it is the exact opposite of those big megaplex theaters. It's just one theater, they have the old-fashion seats, they don't ply you with constant inane trivia games and they don't run commercials before the credits. In fact, they don't show credits. Once the lights go down, you can count on the movie starting! We love that. We also like the hometown feel of the theater. If you get there early, you are usually treated to live music played by local talent. With LVC right next door, I am sure there's a wealth of talent. The owner introduces the film beforehand, which adds to the hometown charm. Best. Theater. In. Central PA.
The Allen Theatre is a fun place to see a movie if you are looking for a slower paced movie experience. The experience begins with live announcements (over the mic) followed by a single flick. Don't expect previews here and I cannot recommend the food or coffee at the connected MJ's coffee- blah. But, overall, it's a good place.
Just a cute and nice step back in time with all modern movie needs! Great old movie theater with a nice staff who takes time to thank you for coming to the theater. Sometimes there is entertainment before the movie, like organ or piano playing. Coffee shop is nice, food is good. Nice place to have a time out from the world as they have free wifi too
Where else can you go and have a cappuccino while watching the latest movie? They have "sweeties" too. The theatre often does special series of entertainment which is interesting, also music nights. It really is a good stop for a night out.
This place has gone downhill fast and now they are existing on their past achievements. The food is inconsistent. Mostly the soup is cold and sometimes you'll get a hot sandwich. The service is surly and rife with that "we are doing you a favor" attitude. The movies ALWAYS start late (15-30 minutes-mostly due to the owner's tardiness and incessant pre-movie babel) so do not make any post-theater plans as you probably will not be able to honor them. They also keep movies for weeks on end and could do better to change them at a faster pace. Not on my list anymore.
Although service is a little slow, they have a cozy coffee shop, which is attached to a wonderful theatre with all the new digital sound.
It's just a place to go and satisfy hunger and thirst if no one else is open. Coffee was not that great. Little pricey desserts and coffee.
We have stopped here for sandwiches, desert and coffee on different occasions. Love the atmoshpere and the food. Also caught a movie one night at the Allen. The Sandwiches were very good as was the deserts. Not a huge selection, but for a coffee shop they do great. Laughing Sally is a little creepy, but we did not even notice her until our second visit (you have to look up!). They also have icecream, but we have not tried that yet.
