I grew up at Wertz Candies and a visit here brings back a flood of memories. Even if you're not from Lebanon, Pa you will revisit your youth here too. In addition to their terrific homemade chocolates, made right there in the back of the shop, every candy item you remember from the late 50's onward is available for purchase. Peel off some candy dots, unwrap a clear toy lollipop, put on a pair of wax lips or enjoy a REAL taffy apple. 45 years ago, in a place that only exists in my memory, is the Academy Movie Theater, Colonial or State movie theater up and down Cumberland Street...all long gone, but the candy store I visited pre theater is STILL there! I can still buy the same fabulous caramel corn I 'snuck' into the theater with. If you are in the area, visiting Hershey or the Amish country, make time to visit this treasure frozen in time. FROM FIELD OF DREAMS:Dr. Archibald "Moonlight" Graham: This is my most special place in all the world, Ray. Once a place touches you like this, the wind never blows so cold again. You feel for it, like it was your child.
This is an excellent candy store. The chocolates are wonderful and the service is outstanding. They make delicious Carmel corn daily as well as chocolate covered pretzels and opera fudge. Anita W
Tiny shop but big pleasure. Locals know the shop is small and can get crowded but should know patience is worth it. The carmel corn is addictive! Take a sample as soon as you leave the store and the tasty treat will be gone before you get home. I gave the Shuey's chocolate covered pretzels to friends at work last year for Christmas presents (I work outside of Lebanon so they never had them before). They all loved them and one woman called them "crack" because she found them also addictive. But try the other home made chocolates they are just as wonderful!
The fantastic little candy shop gets 5 stars because of the people who own it and run it, the incredible selection of unique and even not unique sweets, and the fact that this little family owned candy shop can still succeed in today's business environment. Can you get the treats they have somewhere else at a lower price? Maybe. But what you won't get are the unique items that they have and how they present them, and how they can customize an order for you for Christmas with a smile and excellent service. It is very small inside, so go in there at a time from 930 to 11 a.m. Or 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.. Parking is also a challenge, just make sure you put money in the meter. You can easily get a ticket downtown during the week.If you're looking for something unique, ask about their chocolate covered, caramel coated Shuey pretzels. They are fantastic and you can get them in milk chocolate and dark chocolate. Rich and bill and the entire staff do the very best to help the customers on a timely basis. If you show patience you will be rewarded. Or you can figure out when to get in there during the less crowded times, and you can browse to your heart's delight in a little store that brings back strong memories of the penny candy store in New York City that my dad used to tell me about and bring my brothers and sisters to.
Wertz is a Lebanon tradition; don't miss it if you're in downtown Lebanon. Their popcorn is great, as are the chocolate covered Shuey's pretzels. Plan ahead for the holidays, as it gets tight during rush season!
Good chocolate, but not overly amazing, just good basic chocolate. I have bought hard candy there and chocolate covered pretzels.
