For a nice short walk on trails this is a well kept park. You can view birds in the marsh, wander the woods, or just sit on a bench and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
We love taking our dogs for a walk here. The trails are well marked and level so it is an easy hike. The view is beautiful along the Thunder Bay River and we are often treated to the sight of ducks, swans and geese. There is also a paved wheelchair accessible path that ends at a scenic overlook. All in all a great place for a walk, no matter what your physical abilities.
One of my favorite places in Alpena. It is located within the city limits but you would never know it as you hike around the island. I love to go with our daughter, a botany and nature study teacher - there is so much to see and learn about.
Hidden gem of a park - many people probably just think it's a parking area -- but walk into the park and you will discover a large island park with highly varied geography and extensive trails which are a delight to walk -- not many people, back end of island borders floodlands/creeks, can see lots of cranes, geese, swans, etc... Very peaceful - highly recommend it...
If you like fishing or walking paths in the woods, the little island is a great place to do so. They also have a kayak launch along with kayaks and bikes to rent. There are picnic tables and barbecues which are not on the little island, but are still along the river area. I love just walking the paths on the island.
Taking a quiet walk onto an island with wildlife, birds, trees and occasional turtles is wonderful. You lose track of time as you take in the beauty walking around the sanctuary.
A nice place to go for a walk in the city. The wildlife around Duck Island are used to people; so you can usually walk up very close to observe them. Good exercise, good views, nice easy exercise.
