The sandy dunes, water/waves, ample parking, and clean pavilion make this one of our favorite spots.
We've camped here and have been to the day use area beach. Huge stretch of sandy beach. Just beautiful. Decent bathroom and picnic facilities. Nice nature trail. You can canoe the river to the beach. Not too far from Port Austin or Caseville.
Great marina for boat watching (or using...) lots of benches to relax on. Very clean. A long pier to walk out on and enjoy. The beach is clean and nice. Small but fun playground for the kids. Real bathrooms!!
Take the trail off the Buccaneer Den road. It takes you out to the beach east of Port Crescent. Port Crescent itself is a great day trip (buy the annual pass). Beach is clean and family friendly, great for a picnic. The campgrounds offer some great beachfront spots, though tight and you may not be able to have full hookups.
My sister and I wanted to go camping, not camping which means stuck next to a huge RV or you can spit on your neighbor. I did some research and after narrowing down to a few places we fell in love with Port Crescent State Park. The park is extremely clean and the staff was very friendly and helpful. They let us drive through, pick our own spot and then go back up and pay for it. When we went it was a bit early (June 8th) but there were only about a dozen other campers in the entire park. We chose spot 62 which I believe is the best. Spots in the mid to higher 50's are also pretty nice but they were taken. We had tons of privacy, a nice fire pit, close to the shower house and most importantly our own path leading down to the beach. We watched the sunsets and honestly I can say it's been one of the prettiest I've seen anywhere in the world!! The "beach" should not be taken to literally. It's not like you can sprawl out on it but it can fit your camping chairs down there to catch the lake breeze and watch the sun fall behind the lake. The place was super quiet and only saw a few people out for a night stroll or a bike ride. There Re also really nice trails right next door that walk along the small sand dunes and offer amazing views of the lake. You can hike, rent kayaks or canoes fish or just chill. During the days we checked out the surrounding towns which was fun. Great place to go out and get lost. I would highly recommend this place for people who want something primitive without having to strap on the backpack and go for a hike. I am sure later in the season things will change a bit but the views will always be amazing. The commercial for Pure Michigan was shot from one of the campsites in the 50's. Pretty much the same view we had!! Campsites are about $27 plus you have to pay a state park fee which I think was $11. Worth it in the end!! Relax and enjoy!!
Went during cold weekend & weather was chilly. Camping on lake with beautiful view. Secluded & private. Cozy small campground. Loved it. Will definitely go again anytime.
I had previously stayed at this campground many years ago. I decided to take my family to this campground Memorial Weekend. Our first night was pleasant, even though many campers will still coming in late and noise levels were higher then I expected after 11P. I was surprised to see children at the site across from us using flashlights, riding bikes/scooters and playing loudly at that time. The restrooms/showers were new since the last time I was there. They were maintained and cleaned. No complaints there! However, the second night was quieter until 3A when our "neighbors" returned to their site and were loud (yelling expletives at each other and throwing things around). They woke up my entire family. We choose not to say anything to them. After an hour of their antics, it quieted down. When it was 7A, our "neighbors" cell phone alarms kept going off and they were not turning them off. We had enough and decided to pack up and leave. They were rude, inconsiderate and our tents were less then 10ft away from them. I stopped in the office and "checked out", I spoke with a ranger letting her know what happened. She said that I should have called 911 and reported a domestic dispute. I explained that I thought rangers patrolled the campground. She explained that they are a small campground and they have off hours, so they don't have a ranger patrolling at that time of night. It was not like I could have called 911 either, I didn't have cell service. I was disappointed to know that no one was patrolling. I know that the budget cuts play a roll in the number of employees available. I was also disappointed due to the lack of beach. There is not much space to walk along the beach, the water laps up to the tall grass, there is very little sand to walk. I remember there being so much more beach. I ranked this average due to the beach, noise, lack of patrols and staff. It is still a beautiful campground with well maintained facilities. Note: They recycle!
This park has a very nice beach area that is ALL sand. Nice restroom facilities and easy access to beach.
We always get a pass for this park. Great dunes and swimming with very little rocks. Our last day we knew there would be small waves due to a cold front heading in, so we loaded up for wave jumping fun. Bathrooms are available as well as pavilion picnic area, but no showers ( we have been told that there are before ).
I loved this beach. The sand is like flour and the water is sparkling cold as you would expect. Only complaint was the upkeep of the parking areas. Weeds growing everywhere and up to the side mirrors of our car. Be prepared to walk uphill thru the really thick soft sand when going back to your car.
The walking/biking loops around the Park and the access paths to the beach were all nicely maintained. The area offered a good day-trip spot to walk around on some nice nature trails and then venture to the beach. The beach was well-kept and clean and had plenty of good swimming. The Park is not particularly notable otherwise, but works very well for a local day-trip.
I took my grandson camping at Sleeper State Park about a mile South of Port Crescent during the first weekend in June. We had my Labradoodle dog with us, so we hiked in to the beach just up the road from the day use park near the Port Crescent Campground. The trail head is just before the Buccaneer Restaurant on the left. There is an old bridge that you have to cross right away. Hike about 1.4 mile in to the beach, and you can see the campground from the beach there. We hiked down the beach a bit, and the devastation from the storms was pretty dramatic. The beach at that point was littered with logs and driftwood, and there were sand bars that were not safe to walk on. I sunk one leg to my thigh in soft sand when I stepped onto one of them. The water was lovely and clear with a bit of algea or seaweed. We did also park at the front of the Port Crescent Day use park and hike in. There were several other people doing the same thing. The road was washed out, but they had all of the heavy equipment on-site and had already graded and laid sand for the new road. The beach there was clean and beautiful. The bath house was closed, and the outdoor foot bath was turned off. It looks as if they haven't been keeping things up very well there. The dunes are encroaching onto the boardwalk along the beach.
Locals tell me the road (inside state park) that drives you back to day use beach parking area has washed out and DNR is NOT repairing it for this season --- which would make use of the day use beach prohibitive this summer I would recommend calling to check on this before planning a trip there. This would NOT affect the overnight camping beach that is a couple miles away from this.
Unfortunately they have less staff working there due to state budget cuts --- but nice sand dunes and beach
My family goes there every summer and stays for a week, sometimes longer. The campground is VERY well maintained, there are full shower facilites, there is a private beach, and there is a playground. I HIGHLY reccommend this campground for both tent camping and RV camping. This is one that you do not want to miss out on.
