This sounds like a wonderful place to picnic, and hang out. NOT AT ALL THE CASE. The island is more or less a place for drug activity, and prostitution on a day to day basis. When there is a concert or big function ITS GREAT, but any other time.... keep on driving. Broken glass and trash everywhere, grass needs to be mowed. The city does not maintain this at all.
Ojibway Island is lovely - truly - but with the limited parking it is frustrating. We drove in circles, to finally find a spot. That just put a damper on things.
I image if you just wanted a picnic table to catch some rays or fresh air by the river this the place for you. There were a number of young men hanging around with no obvious purpose. So I don't think I would recommend this as a place to take the family. Too bad as the park has some great places to visit nearby.
A ride around the island has areas for gatherings & yard games, parking and picnic tables usually available. Attractions include Music Festival during the summer, Public stage area for civic functions, playground for kids. Sit along the Saginaw river and enjoy a usually peaceful time.Originally a massive mound of sawdust from the lumbering era, Ojibway Island became hard packed as more fill dirt was added to stabilize the ground. That land was made official real estate in 1905 when the property was donated to the city by lumber baron Ezra Rust.Check out the official rocktheisland website:http://www.rocktheisland.net/about-ojibway-island/
I had business to do on the otherside of the river, had a few minutes to spare and decided to cruise around the Island. It used to be a great place to go, but this part of town is not the safest anymore and I would not go there at night. When there are large events like the KCQ concert it would be safe enough, but alone, or at night, not so much. There is only one way on and off the Island, and the road is one way. It would be too easy to get in a world of hurt on the back end. I would not eat any fish caught in the river. If you are looking for a park like setting, say for a picnic or family gathering, I would go elsewhere.
This park hosts several concerts throughout the summer and spring months, a big one is the Country Music Fest that attracts people from all over , even bussing people in to Saginaw. Also a nice park to do your walking and viewing the fireworks.
Ojibway may be just an island in the Saginaw river but it does have many fine events on it throughout the year, from concerts to fireworks. It is easy access just across the Court St. Bridge with parking on the west side of the river about 1/4 mile away, so bring your lawn chair and enjoy a show.
What a great place for a concert! It was clean, safe, and very accessible. We paid to park right on the island. We were there for Rock the Island, but it looks like it would be a great place to take the family. It is also very pretty.
Clean, well maintained. A certain amount of litter lying around. We saw geese, a grey heron or some kind, squirrels and what we think was a musk-rat.
Still a nice spot to spend the afternoon. Take a lunch, your dog and of course your family and friends. On the water, nice views.
Not place to visit if you value your life. I have seen weapon drawn and fights there. There are several activities held there like the KCQ festival and they clean up the park for these. But when there are no events you will rarely see an police officer. Not bad in the winter either when ice fishermen take over but make sure you lock your equipment in your vehicle.
Ojibway Island used to be a nice place. It is now a place where derelicts and drugggies hang out. The park used to have a nice playground. That is gone. Trash cans are overflowing. Just not a good atmosphere anymore.
Catch the Eddy Band during summer months. Good music from area musicians, many are our music teachers and directors at schools.
Nice place to go for concerts or benefits is a little iffy after dark
A nice place to listen to the Eddy Band for summer concerts.
