Wow...take the the tram down the hill and hold on and then dare to go into the constantly 50 degree mine and just try to get your head around life under ground.
Three of us were in the U.P. on motorcycles and the weather was misty with a temptature at about 53 degrees, instead of staying holed up in a motel room we went to Quincy Mine and did the tour. Fantastic! Great tour - and I learned a little bit of what those miners went through years ago. You won't be disapointed with this tour - do it!
We had a wonderful tour of the outside and inside of the mine. You are only on one level but it really shows part of the conditions of how these poor people worked. I liked the ride down to the opening of the mine. Beautiful scenery from up high.
As a partner of the Keweenaw National Historical Park it is a site worth visiting. We thoroughlyenjoyed the tour. Riding the tram was fun and I'd suggest trying to get a front seat so you cantake a cool picture as it travels down the hill! Inside the mine was interesting and the tour guide did a great job with his presentation and with lots of enthusiasm considering how many times heconducted the tour each day. The above ground attractions were also interesting and we metsome very interesting people from New Zeeland during the tour which enhanced our visit evenmore! Educational and fun!!! We are recommending it to all our friends. There'sa fish marketacross the street that has a great fish fry with outdoor seating also!
The tour guides are excellent!. When this mine was operational the depth of the mine was 9200 feet plus. During the tour you will be about 450 feet underground. You will leave the mine with an appreciation for the work and the lives of the miners in Quincy mine. My wife and I sure did.
It's amazing this is still around to be seen given how many of the buildings from the copper mining area can be seen crumbing in place. From the operation center where the lowering and raising of cars carrying people and copper were handled, to the cog train ride down the mountain and ride into the mine, this is a something you can't experience in very many places. Bonus: Whether it's blazing hot or freezing cold outside, it's always 55 degrees in the mine! They provide coats and hardhats. Kids of all ages seemed to like it, and they have a nice gift shop.
We were very happy with this mine tour. We had never toured a mine before and were very satisfied with this tour. Be sure to be dressed warmly though because it's cold in the mine. We were given hard hats, jackets and taken on a tram then tractor ride into level 7 of the mine. It was very interesting to witness an actual copper mine. The tour guide and driver were very well qualified.
We went for the mine tour. It was okay, nothing too interesting. We sat on wagon pulled by a tractor to go into the mine. The guide spent a good 15min explaining what we might see before we enter coz it would be too loud to hear him once the tractor starts moving. Well, I kind of forgot most of what he said when we were going. I hope they could use some headsets so we can hear and see at the same time.
Mining was a tough job. This give you a glimpse of what it was like to work deep in the mines. The tour guide provides excellent insight and information about what life was like as a miner, the difficulties they faced and what it was like dealing with advances in technologies and economic realities. This mine went down almost 2 miles and had the world's largest steam driven hoist, which is on display too. Excellent tour. Well worth it.
We took the full mine tour, but other options available. Able to go into the mine and given historical information about the heyday of copper mining and the technology they used. Fascinating. Kids will enjoy the cog train and trip into the mine. amazing how hard the job was and the conditions. History at its best. They give senior and AAA discounts, so it is very reasonable. Allow 2 to 3 hours.
This was our second mine tour, the first being in California, so we had somewhat of an idea of what to expect. We were simply amazed by the knowledge shared by the guide! The tour lasted about 2 hours and was well worth the money! The guide into the mine itself answered all of our questions w/o hesitation. The man knew his stuff! He was very enthusiastic - it was like he actually lived the life of a miner! He willingly answered everyone's questions - he included us all in conversation. Hope to go back some day!
the tour of the quincy mine was one of the highlights of our trip. employees were very friendly & helpful. our tourguide ( sorry, i didn't write down his name, but his wife works in the mine store ) was very knowful & made the visit very enjoyable & we gained so much inside to what miners life was about & their working conditions. i would go on another visit in a heartbeat !
This is a national historic site. Several tour options. We chose the full tour. It's gave us an appreciation to what miners endured. The tour guides answered questions but for the most part appeared very bored with their jobs. I didn't mind paying for the tour as I am glad to support the national historic parks. If you don't want the full tour I would just do the land tour. Spending an extra $6 for a short tram ride isn't worth it for the surface and tram tour.
Interesting tour. The guide was VERY knowledgeable about the mine's history, and working conditions over the history of the copper mines. It was well worth the drive.
Very interesting mining history attraction. Would recommend this tour to families, individuals, couples..etc.
