I planned a trip around this museum because it sounded so cool! They were supposed to have a guest lecturer on Sundays that sounded super interesting. We got there and it was CLOSED. We were devastated. This was supposed to be the main attraction on our vacation. I wish they would have posted on www.Michigan.org that they were going to close.
We've been meaning to come here for years. Finally went on the pirate ride and visited the museum. Our 5 year old daughter loved the ride but found most of the museum boring. It is a small museum but very nice.
Nice little museum near the drawbridge with an excellent exhibit on Great Lakes shipwrecks. The exhibit was reverent and emotional, yet left you with a sense of history. I attended during the week, but the Sunday exhibit included divers and special narrators, with special tributes.
being a old Coastie in the 60';s I enjoyed this place since the are more on the Coast Guard then any other
I liked everything! No dislikes. Although the museum is small it houses some good artifacts and I was shocked to see how many ships had sunk off the coast of Lake Michigan
We have a membership after many great visits to the maritime museum. The exhibits are fascinating and easy to navigate and the grounds are filled with sailng artifacts. Staff are helpful and friendly, snd the gift shop is a lit of fun.
Unfortunately, because of rain, we had to find somewhere to go!! This was an excellent choice!! So interesting and fun!
As a native Michigander, seeing the history of the Great Lakes is very interesting to me. Their projects are worth a look.
The museum is a great way to spend a rainy or very hot day. Lots of great things to hear and see. If your time permits don't miss the ride on Friends Good Will the tall ship its so worth the journey
The museum is interesting, especially for nautical history buffs, but when the Friends Good Will is in port, you can go out with them for a 1.5 hour sail, which is very worthwhile. Kids have to be 4 or older.
First off there was no parking in museum parking lot and they said we couldn't park in the marina parking or we would be towed so we had to park over 2 blocks away. There was an auction going on and people selling fishing stuff in the parking lot which is why thwre was no parking and auction going on in front of the coast guard exhibits so we couldn't see those. The museum is like 2 rooms, one building on their brochure wasn't even built yet. I would go for the boat ride again, but not the actual museum.
This museum is a perfect diversion if the beach weather isn't optimal. The museum is interesting in its own right, but I highly recommend it if you want to do something in/around South Haven that's indoors. This small museum has a number of displays of shipwrecks on the Great Lakes, ranging from the pretty well known Edmund Fitzgerald (made famous in the Gordon Lightfoot song) to lesser known wrecks. The museums exhibits are thoughtfully labeled and curated. There is an entire room devoted to the 1950 northwest airlines crash over Lake Michigan that includes artifacts found afterwards as well as theories as to what happened and biographies of the passengers. There are also two small outer buildings, one in which they repair boats and one that displays early coast guard boats. The museum has a lovely gift shop full of books and souvenirs that make nice gifts (earrings, activity books for kids, bags).
I'm not a huge boating person but found this museum quite interesting. Lots of info. on the Great Lakes shipwrecks along with info. on the NW flight that crashed in Lake Michigan back in 1950. Spent a couple hours there and would say it was well worth the cost to get in.
This museum is small but has very interesting information and artifacts from the area. It displays the location of all the shipwrecks in Lake Michigan over the years.
On a grey day we decided to pick blueberries and then head to the Michigan Maritime Museum. There is a fascinating and nicely displayed inside exhibit about all the shipwrecks that have occurred on the Great Lakes, including the Edmund Fitzgerald of Gordon Lightfoot fame. There was also an exhibit of the never found Northwest plane flight. Outside are some old Coast Guard rescue boats, a workshop, and the Tall Ship "Friends Good Will". We will come back some day with our 8 year old twins for a ride on the ship.
