I would have given this a firewall rating most likely if it wasn't for the "civil war" moniker they so blatantly and commercially slapped on the name to attract the interest of civil war historians and the like. Yes there is a slight connection to the civil war as parties did use the cave and surrounding area during the conflict, but the Osage people used it much longer as did European settlers in the region and even church camps during the 20th century - there is even a plaque regarding this on the cave wall. The cave itself is a marvel for geologists or spelunkers to behold and it has several rather unique features rarely found in other caves, it is well worth a visit for serious cave enthusiasts...not quite so much for civil war enthusiasts...oh well can't win them all. We saw and photographed a native crayfish...solid white in color - these are rare but they do live in the Smallin cave, saw at least two species of bats (we didn't photograph them as we didn't want them fluttering about), and a raccoon deep inside the cave as well...so in addition to geology you may well see some interesting biological specimens. Our guide was both informative and funny, he hold a doctoral degree in anthropology but was well versed in the local geology as well. Well worth the trip.

Great caving experience and for us Old Geezers; no stairs or uphill climbing. The cave is on one level, which makes it great for strollers, young children and wheelchairs. Our guide was very knowledgeable in regards to the cave and local history. My wife and I enjoyed our tour very much. We are both glad that we took the time and effort to travel to Smallin Civil War Cave. You can’t go wrong! Enjoy; we will be returning. In Jan./Feb. Call: 417-551-4545 for tour hours.

We just went on a lantern tour and loved it. The guides were very hospitable and knowledgeable. We have been to the cave during the day on a tour and loved it also. You can't go wrong with a daytime or nighttime tour. Every time we have been we have come away wanting to go again. Worth the price and a better activity to do as a family instead of a movie. Can't say it enough but this was a great experience!

We went on a lantern tour of the Smallin Cave last night. It was beautiful and interesting to visit. The history--the fossils--the cave critters. Everything. Completely accessible also for all ages and physical abilities.

It's worth visiting at least once. The entrance has an amazing view and the fossils found there tell a story of the Ozarks history. Fun date or outing with the family.

The Smallin Civil War Cave is a privately-owned natural wonder. The beauty of the cave was absolutely breath-taking. I love taking pictures, but there are some times when you just have to put the camera down and stare at the beauty of creation. This is one of those times. Standing inside the cave, looking out through the massive opening at the creek bed and trees beyond- it is a majestic sight. The regular tour is less than an hour long, though they have more in-depth tours that go farther and have extras such as dinner served, or wading to go farther into the cave. (That is on my list of things to do when I have the extra time.) All sorts of small animals live in the cave, and you should be able to see at least some of them. I saw blind crayfish, cave crickets, frogs, and bats. There are several very unique formations in the cave, and a lot of history, from the Indians of the area, the Civil War, and the settlers thereafter. This cave is definitely worth a stop.

We visited as a large family of 10 with children ranging from 4-13. Our family is from this area so we were interested to learn the history of the cave and about its life during war time... And what a life the cave has had. All the stories of the people who have come and gone.. And in one way or another left their mark in the history of the beautiful creation. The tour was very informative. And the history is rich. It has defiantly been in trusted into the right hands during this day and time. Our whole experience was completely delightful. The cave is a gorgeous example of the beauty that can be found here on earth.

I live in the area and have never stopped to visit the Smallin cave before, the name is deceiving this is a big cave. I have been to many caves all over the US and this is a very nice one. It is easy to navigate with no stairs. They have dinner tours on some Saturday nights. They cooked us a nice home cooked dinner by a camp fire with stories and a tour to follow. They also had a few actor appearances during the tour with torches as all. This gave a nice touch to the story telling. This cave has water running through it at times I would like to go back and visit a day or two after a heavy rain as I am sure it would be even more beautiful.

The cost of this cave is far less than other nearby caves. Also you can get closer to the actual cave than at the others. Guides were very knowledgeable and friendly. Also trails were very easy to navigate.

We asked the person at the front desk TWICE if this cave had anything to do with the Civil War. That was our main interest. Twice his answer was that it did. After purchasing our ticket and going on the one hour tour it had NOTHING to do with the Civil War. They lied and they ripped us off. Sorry, we don't appreciate that.

Well worth the stop to tour this cave. Not far off the highway. A smaller, family owned type business, the staff and owners do a great job. Learn about history and science while enjoying the beauty and wonder of nature. Glad we stopped.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Smallin Cave. The cave has quite an interesting history and prehistory. The action of flowing water has created amazing cave formations. Smallin is unusual with so many species of living cave creatures. The staff was friendly and helpful. The guide did a wonderful job of informing and entertaining.

A trip going through this cave is a great experience. Not only is the cave very unique, but you get a history lesson as well. Located in a quite area. Have been through this one about four or more times over the last 40 years. Have seen it grow to one of ozarks best places to see. One trip was a friends wedding.

Absolutely worth your visit. Kevin knows so many stories about the area and the people who are part of this cave's history. We heard some parts twice (doubled back to pick up a couple who had just arrived) and it was just as interesting the second time around. This is not a cave requiring athleticism; there are walkways and lights, but it's all done in an non-obtrusive way. We were lucky to catch a glimpse of not just one but two rare crayfish. It's worth your trip just to marvel at their nearly-translucent bodies trying to avoid the beam of Kevin's flashlight.
