Three Squirrels is the most sophisticated of the three wineries on Route B in St. James. It's actually out in the countryside, so has a different ambiance from the ones in town. We did a standard tasting flight from drier to sweeter and were told that the 2 sweetest dessert wines represent about 50% of the business. We tried the drier reds, but though they were more complex than the reds at the other two wineries, they just can't compete with the reds of the West Coast and Europe that have defined our wine palates. On the other hand, the Red Squirrel and the White Squirrel, two medium wines, were individual in nature and unique enough for us to purchase. The presence of an art gallery on the second floor of this old farmhouse makes this an interesting destination. The fact that we recognized where some of the photos were taken (Burano, Italy) added an international flavor to our visit. The artwork is from local artists and is for sale. The proprietor is committed to his relatively new enterprise with relatively old vines and is interesting to talk to. Generous military discounts.

For anyone who resides in Missouri or is passing through Missouri, Three Squirrels Winery is a must see attraction. The blends of fine wine are outstanding, and to finish that off, the gallery is filled with fine art. Non-alcoholic beverages are available for those who chose not to taste.

Yes, Scamper (the cat, and according to the owner, the chief of operations) greeted us when we arrived in the second-floor tasting room/art gallery. She loves to explore purses, so if you have one you don't want rifled, keep it closed tight and away from Scamper!Nice selection of Three Squirrels wines at the tasting bar - a pretty heavy pour of any/all from the proprietor... very nice! We worked our way from dry to sweeter and settled on a couple of glasses of "White Squirrel" while we browsed the local artists' wares and enjoyed the outdoor courtyard (with fountain). There's also a second-story covered deck which overlooks the fields - picnic tables and plastic chairs/folding tables up there.Wines - better than other nearby St James wineries. Nice assortment of cheeses and chocolate, beers and sodas, and of course, all the art for sale. Be nice to Scamper and her "guard cat" friend (whom we didn't meet) - you'll enjoy yourself here.
