Be sure to stop by this exhibit and museum while visiting the Vicksburg Military Park. This is a very interesting piece of history and civil war engineering/technology. Take the time to see this.

Never knew that an Iron Clad was this large. What a great facility to walk around and through. You could almost feel the men moving through this restored piece of history. The small museum has some really nice articles taken from the recovery.

The park service did a wonderful job restoring the ironclad. It really makes history come alive when you can actually walk the deck of a ship.

Loved being able to walk among the wooden bones of this historic boat! Amazing to look at the well preserved artifacts.

firstly, the partial ship outside is extremely impressive. the replica part is very well done.secondly, there is a small museum inside with more info. on the Cairo as well as artifacts from the ship (or ships like it). lots of interesting period pieces.definitely talk with Ranger David Slay, PHD who is an expert on the USCT (United States Colored Troops as it is designated), as well as a wealth of knowledge, not only of Vicksburg, but of much of the Civil War as well. you can learn more from him in 20 minutes than you can reading a book on the Miss. River campaigns. happy trails

Wow such a fascinating job of preserving a relic of our nation's history. You are able to walk through and around the boat on functional and safe walkways. Coming down the hill next to the museum the tent cover over the boat reminded us the Denver airport's roof.

Really interesting and excellent information panels. We all (57,58,22 years of age) found this really interesting.

It all fits together: the Old County Courthouse Museum and the National Military Park. Seeing the film of the resurrection of the Cairo is fascinating, don't miss it.

Took my young daughter, there is a small museum inside past the gift shop. Cool photo ops and the attraction is free!

The USS Cairo Museum is one of the best examples of it's type I've seen. The USS Cairo was a Union ironclad gunboat which was sunk near Vicksburg during the civil war. The museum includes a very modern display of the artifacts recovered in the wreck, as well as the wreck itself. Very much worth the time to see.

We purchased the parks auto tour and very well worth it. I have two Teague boys and they too enjoyed the tour. Hearing and learning about every point of the park. We trly recommend the auto tour, very helpful!

This Civil War ironclad was sunk during the siege of Vicksburg and not recovered from the bottom of the Mississippi until 100 years later. Today it has been restored and stands in the Vicksburg Military Park for visitors to admire, You can clearly see where it was hit and burned. What an amazing piece of history. I'm always glad when I see the government using our tax dollars to preserve treasures like this one.

Very interesting seeing an actual remains of a union Battle ship used in the civil war. Display and museum are excellent. what a learning experience seeing this.

Located amidst the graves off all those soldiers, the museum includes interesting facts in its display. Enjoyed this second visit as much as the first visit. There's nothing rushed here, so one can take their time and enjoy the surroundings and be touched by the soldiers all around them.

The Cairo (pronounced KAY-row, after the city in Illinois) is the last surviving Union river gunboat, if you can call the wreckage "surviving." Sunk in 1862, what remained of her was raised and reassembled. You can walk around her and walk on the gun deck and look down at the engines, and the nearby museum is loaded with tools and possessions found in the wreckage.
