Whenever I go to visit my family in New Canaan I always stop by Goldenberry, located on Cherry and Vitti Streets, to find specialty European gifts and novelties for myself, family and friends. There is something for everyone including for children and they also have a delicious imported foods section as well. Goldenberry is a wonderful, 'other-worldly' store that is an absolute pleasure to visit. The staff is also very helpful in finding a special something for that special someone. Very highly recommended.
I have visited this treasure many times and recently brought visiting friends to the shop. The food (English, Irish, Scottish and more) is wonderful. I love the the bangers, the fish, and the authentic imported chocolates and biscuits (cookies). Huge selection! But Goldenberry is not just British goods. My friends loved the wide selection of gifts in the store and the eclectic mix , and I purchased a beautiful engagement gift. Most of all, I love the friendly & pleasant atmosphere in the store, an atmosphere which is created by the knowledgeable staff. Ask them for her advice on how to choose the perfect gift or if you want to know more about the foods.
I go to these particular specialty stores occasionally in order to obtain fine food goods I need from the countries of England , Scotland and Ireland.I went to this store in particularly to purchase some fine Marmalades....for my Christmas Cookies.I did finally find them.My friend whom accompanied me there had already visited on several occasions----I had given her a Groupon for a gift earlier in the year....but had not visited the store until this time.Overall I enjoyed my visit. And I would recommend a stop in for anyone visitng the area or Hotels from the surrounding towns of Norwalk and Westport whom are into these sorts specialty items, They even had wonderful English POPPERS!!. The Next nearest specialty store I'm aware of is in Danbury Connecticut, Quite a distance away.. But...for instance......they had a worker following us around ---I suppose to give good service. When I asked her to show me the Marmalades--this worker did take me to one area of stock. Well , she did not know the product nor the business well---because she showed me low level varietys and seemed not to know of any other stock. Finally --I guess when the owner overheard my displeasure in this stock---she sort of came running in with multiple jars of the sort of product I expected and exactly what I needed----but what a strange odd ball situation.Worker not knowing one marmalade from another ?Owner did--workers did not.My friend and I went thru the store and we began to add items onto the front counter--sometimes asking the worker to bring it up for us and one of the workers came and gave me a basket suggesting that I needed to use it....I had to explain that I had a back injury and would not be able to walk around with a hand held basket to shop......and I think she became annoyed. When I asked all three of them about a particular variety of tea they were selling. No one knew anything about the taste of it at all. Their response was to "read " the label. When one goes to a English shop you would expect the owner at least to understand the Teas they are selling. Anyway--I bought another tea----a lovely ChristmasTea-- that I had knowledge of. The tea in question had MALT in it and I wondered about the taste.Still do ---so maybe next time. One of the worker mentioned rather gruffly to me -- "THAT THIS IS A ENGLISH STORE YOU KNOW ! ......Hmmmmm ?.This same worker ---while checking out --I asked her if they took Discover Card?.....and---she seemed flustered and didn't know-----then SNATCHED the card from my hand --intensely read it and then stated NO !! They didn't take that card. VERY ODD !!!!! She also keeped mixing up the orders between myself and my friend.....and I had to correct her several times on what was mine !!!I think perhaps Help is hard to get in this area,,as once again.,,I've never experienced such strangeness in other similar businesses I have visited.So--anyway---I was able to make my Christmas Cookies with my special Maramalade and Preserves. I was able to serve my guests some really luscious Christmas Tea---the real thing from England with oranges and spice................However the service here was very poor and supposedly they specialize IN SERVICE.Could it of been me somehow ? It makes one wonder.
