This outwardly-appearing simple farmhouse, built by the surgeon general to the Continental Army in c.1770, has a wonderful surprise inside - beautiful carved paneling in two rooms that rival that of Richmond's Wilton and Charleston's Drayton Hall. Headquarters of the Archeological Society of Virginia, the home is open only on the second Saturday of every month (closed some winter months). It is an excellent example of how an historic property has changed over time. It also houses the Americana collection of William Cropper, who owned the house with his wife (who moved into the home at age 4 and remained there for her lifetime) for over 50 years and collected everything from butter churns to salesmen's samples to farm and household implements to fine china and glassware to whatever - you name it, he collected it! What a find this was!
