We have bee taking walks in the Eleanor Lawrence Park for more than 20 years and I'm glad to say little has obviously changed. Maybe at times you can hear the traffic from Rte 28 but mostlyit's quiet. You may meet dog walkers, runners and a few stick waving pirate kids but it is always a soothing experience. If you have children you can take them to the nature centre between the upper and lower walking areas. There are clean bathrooms here and a water fountain. You may see some wild life and you'll certainly hear it. A walk around the pond at the bottom end brings you to the picnic area - busier at the weekends but still not busy and with ample parking there and at the nature centre. It's lovely in all seasons and the walk is not too tough.
Looking for a local place to stretch your legs? This works. Wooded with stream, and forest creatures. Part paved, part gravel. Stroller ok. Enjoy.
I take my granddaughters to Ellanor Lawrence Park often. We usually go to what we call the Nut Park or the Lake Park; two of our favorite areas. Ellanor C Lawrence Park has several distinct areas. Each includes several picnic tables and space for kids and adults to enjoy. The Lake Park has a small pond; the Nut Park is the main entrance to the park and include the park office. There is a trail linking the different areas of the park together. Lots of trails, lots of birds, lots of "quiet" time with family.
We take our 3 yr old son and he loves running though the woods and seeing all the wild life. We've been all over the park and the surrounding area. We even played in the creek this summer when it was hot outside. Great place for a nice peaceful afternoon.
I love this park. It's 600 plus acres in the middle of suburbia is a welcome place on a weekend morning. With the leaves turning, the earthen floor of the woods has an enchanted feel to it. Great for walks with spouse or dog.
Took a picnic here recently and enjoyed the trails, pond with a huge fish and small nature center (with amphibians & reptiles). Surprised they had a honey hive on site. Talked to some park guides and they were friendly, noting the deer were hiding because of the annual deer population reduction program.Pros: Not too crowded, nice nature center with inexpensive gift shop. Restroom in nature center clean.Cons: Picnic area a little too close to major roadway, port a john as restroom in picnic area that could use some cleaning
Small pond with waterlilies, several miles of trails - good for walking and half of them are opened for biking.
Nature center filled with local history and visual displays. Beautiful pond off Walney road with a pavillion perfect for a cookout or picnic. Hiking trails run through the square mile of property surrounding the park. Also a great place to just chill out and enjoy the natural surroundings.
Regardless of the time of year, I find myself drawn to this local park. There is always excellent parking, and lots of trails, streams, and nature to take in. Be certain to take along your camera because the chances are very good that you will find some memory you would like to keep. It's also a great spot for the kids. Visit the museum and the old mill house while you are there. Best of all...it's free!
This is a lovely, local nature preserve near the Walney Visitors Center. It features a quiet, peaceful setting with a lilly pond. A great place for a family picnic (BYO Blanket) or just to carve out a break in a busy day.
In the summer they have a kids entertainment series, Saturdays at 10am. There is also a nice walking path in a wooded area. We haven't made it yet to the other events but they have a wagon ride through a creek or stream, and other nature hikes.
It's a lovely park, but not special enough to drive out of your way. The kids love the pond and looking at the fish and frogs. The nature center has tanks with frogs and snakes and bugs and a little play area for the very young. There's a smokehouse and garden to walk around and taking a tour to see the old ice house and old building foundations is interesting. If you have young kids, make sure to check out the Saturday morning park programs, featuring puppet shows and orchestra and band demonstrations. The hiking paths are well-maintained and it's a lovely, easy walk - with a couple different paths. I think it's a great place for locals and especially for those with little kids.
Lovely park for families and kids....stroll through the paths and look for some wildlife...There's a pond with frogs and lily pads and you can even see tadpoles swimming....Couples stroll across the bridge and there's an opportunity to check out a small museum. Loads of shade and serenity.
My kids love to walk around the old buildings here (smoke house, remains of an ice house, etc.). There are nice hiking trails through the woods, and a little nature center with a few animals (snakes, toads) and hands-on exhibits (touch snake skins, microscopes, etc.). They occasionally have relatively low-cost children's classes as well. A nice place to go for an afternoon of nature.
