Nice paved trail for walking and bike riding. If you ride your bike and start from Liberty Street, go towards Stultz Street for easy ride - it's all level. If you go the other way, it's mostly up hill. Great parking areas.
I like walking up the trail and skating down the slope. It's not steep so you won't pick up a ton of speed unless you push faster. There are sticks and what not on the trail. If you're a newby that loves speed, be careful.
I have used this trail several times for exercise while visiting family in Martinsville. At the Doyle St. entrance to the trail, there is a shed that lets you use bikes & helmets for free. But call ahead to see if they are open! (276) 634-4640 The trail is 4.5 miles long in one direction, so you can get plenty of exercise in. All through the woods for the most part. Also has several signs throughout the trail with a little of the trails history. Neat to read!
Walked the trail for a bit this morning but there just wasn't enough time to see all I wanted to see. I still recommend the walking for what ever time you have to spare. It was a July hot day but the scenery made it well worth it! Everyone I passed was friendly and everything was clean and well cared for! I would definitely do it again!
Turning the old Danville and Western railroad bed into a trail was a wonderful idea. It is nicely paved and, in places, very scenic. We would recommend waling (or biking) the portions not too near traffic noise.
We hope you enjoyed your time in Martinsville and on the trail. The total length of the Dick and Willie Trail is 4.5 miles.
The trail is located on an old railroad bed and is 4.5 miles from one end to the other. There is also a spur trail that goes to the Uptown Martinsville area. Trail has various elevation areas. One section is flat and there is one section that is a long steady incline. Lots of woods/trees along trail which is nice in the summer because there is a lot of shade along the trail.
The Dick and Willie was an old steam train that went from Martinsville to Stuart. The old track bed makes an ideal trail for walking, running, wheelchairs, and baby strollers. It has a slight grade which is non too demanding but presents enough of a challenge to have a good physical outing. It has many access points and I recommend it for a good walk or run.
This is a safe, clean place to walk with your friends or to take your children who can ride their bikes or roller skate.
This is well maintained and very private. What a great way to spend the day!! There has been a new section recently added to the trail. Also, there are several places to stop and enyoy the ambience. So hard to believe this trail is in a downtown area!!
It's a walking trail it winds through Martinsville and Henry County. Paved and has several access points with restrooms along the way. Handycapped parking is avalible with wheel chair access. Bikes are welcome also.
