I'm a hacker, and my reason for playing here is more about socializing with a local friend. It's not a fancy course or clubhouse, but the folks working here couldn't be friendlier. The course is simple, but interesting, requires control (some fairways are narrow), the greens usually in good shape and not very many water hazards. While it can be busy, our early morning, mid-week rounds are usually not crowded. The cost is very reasonable, especially for nine holes and seniors. They will even give you a break on your birthday! There is a driving range. Some of the cart paths are gravel, but we play here frequently and enjoy the laid back atmosphere.
Cameron Hills is a nice layout, but the course needs some work. The tee boxes don't have a lot of grass on them. The fairways have quite a few bare spots on them. The rough is pretty thick with a mix of grass and clover. The greens were slow, but they were well maintained with few ball marks on them. Honestly, the course could be much better in a few weeks with the rough cut to a reasonable length and the greens cut shorter. The carts are old, but serviceable. If you plan on walking, you'll get a workout. There are a lot of elevation changes on the course, but most tees are close to the previous green.
I visit my son in Stafford, VA. When I do I try and play different courses in the area. I'm sure glad I decided to make the 55 minute drive to Carmon Hills Golf Links. The title golf links is misleading. It is in a hilly part of the King George area, and tree lined the entire course. I would call it a moderate mountain course. The fariways were good, the greens, although they appear slow, were fairly fast. It provided many different shot selections from the tees and fairway. The greens were fairly flat, with suttle breaks. They also provide a chance to win a $1,000.00 on a par 3, hole #5. The staff is friendly, and I found the club house adequite for a snack (good pork barbeque.) It's a replay in my books
Cameron is the closest course to where I live so I visit often. Course is decent, though it's been slow to recover from the off season. Pro shop offers basically nothing though that could be a product of the off season as well. Minimal refreshments available and no locker room whatsoever. Good technical course allows for practice on all the shots but it will be a while before it's worth much for work around the greens.
Playing golf year round in Virginia may be a given, but getting great rates in the Northern Neck, on a well laid out course is a pleasant surprise. The mangement was accomodating, friendly and hospitable. Will be back soon!
