I found this place on Tripadvisor while looking for things to do in Lexington, VA. My father & I enjoyed seeing the place. There is not much there to see, but it is worth a stop to strech your legs. There are 3 buildings to see. The Workshop is where he built his working mechanical Reaper. There is a museum set up in there showing how the Reaper changed over time. Anyone who is into antique farming this is a must stop. I plain on going back next time I am in the area.
The history was fascinating and the setting picturesque. It's part of VA Techs facility out that way. We spent maybe 30 minutes stretching our legs and the dog's. It has the two buildings, the blacksmith/workshop and the mill. They are unattended but has a recorded presentation you can listen to for information. If you are in the area it is worth a stop.
Virginia Tech does a great job in maintaining this museum. The displays are informative. It was an education. This is a great place to bring a picnic. The stream that runs through the property is a magnet for the grand-kids. It truly adds to the atmosphere and sounds of the country.
Most people do not know this is even located in this area or that it took place here. Located at Steeles Tavern near Lexington. There is a mill, informative signs, a McCormick Reaper and other farm tools and equipment.
Brilliant in two different ways: a great break on a long trip, and a fantastic little museum. Set in beautiful grounds where it is really a delight to stretch one's legs, the museum itself is just the right size to visit in less than an hour. And it is free: what more could one ask for!
I have passed by his attraction many times and never stopped but am glad I did this time. It is an interesting little piece of American history and best of all it is free. There is a nice little picnic area, restrooms and a short interpretive trail as well as historical exhibits inside restored buildings including a grist mill and blacksmith shop. I look forward to stopping here again with a picnic lunch next time!
The Cyrus McCormick Museum is located at his birthplace, just off I-81 in Raphine, VA, near Steele's Tavern. The shock is, it's a free attraction. It is small, but features a grist mill, a brook, a duck pond and an oak tree down on the road which may be over 200 years old.History buffs should not miss this site.
We enjoyed the ducks at the pond. We toured the still operating mill. There is a nice trail to walk around and picnic tables for a nice picnic if you packed your lunch. Definitely worth a stop off the Interstate 81!
We stopped here en route from Washington to Asheville -- what a pleasant surprise. The grounds are pristine, with a creek, immaculate picnic tables, rest rooms -- and my kids had fun checking out the exhibit. It's FREE, and we were the only people there. Very pleasant way to stretch our legs, have lunch, and learn something.
This is a beautiful spot and a very interesting museum. It is compact and easily seen in a short amount of time. The history of the grist mill and Mr McCormick's reaper are explained beautifully with pictures, text, and actual equipment. And the grounds are beautiful, and include a creek, picnic tables, and a pond with geese!! A perfect place for a picnic with young children!
Nice little historical place not far off the freeway. Park like setting with picnic tables which is perfect for a meal or rest stop. However the smell of cow manure was awful. It was so bad our lunch was close to coming back up, and we had to leave to avoid throwing up.
This is a great piece of American history, well preserved, clean, and the grounds are beautiful, especially in the fall. It is right off of Interstate 81 near gas stations and food. This would be a perfect rest stop for a roadtrip.
We were driving through because my son had won a history competition for making a documentary on McCormick. We surprised him with a stop here. It was great to walk the area. Excellent stop for a family picnic and a look back at one of the most revolutionary inventions in agricultural history.
beautiful little area with lots of history, very nicely restored
I'm a history buff so I loved the historic value of visiting this beautiful place
