Pros:Great trail with many hills. This is a good place to get into shape or practice for more intense hiking later on.The scenery is nothing but woods. There are many places practice climbing or walking on tree trunks. Shady for the summer. The trail itself is well maintained. Cons:Even though the trail is well maintained, the markers are non-existent. Do not plan on relying on them. The trail can be slippery and muddy and roots. The trail is covered in leaves, so branches and roots are hidden and can be a hazard. There was a section for hunting close enough to hear the gunshots. I thought it was too close to the trail.I would not suggest this park for young children. Their small children's area needs vast improvement. No real bathrooms (portable toilets are not real bathrooms).Suggestions:Bring lots of water, bug spray (especially in the summer), a whistle, and a compass. Also bring shoes that are going to be good for muddy terrain.
Print a map before you go as they usually aren't available and the trails do get confusing. My GPS gave a reading of 3.75 miles around the outside trail. We got there around 8 am on a Sunday morning and there wasn't another soul. By the time we finished however, the parking lot was full. Great walk! A little muddy in spots so wear boots.
I am a local however had only been here one other time when my daughter's cross country group met up here for a run. I decided to change up my running routine in the heat of the summer thought running in the woods would be nice. Upon entering the trail there is a map, but the box for hand help maps was empty (also empty a year ago when my daughter went.) It is very nice and quiet back there in the woods, however there is no clear markings along the way. The bike path and walking trails seem to cross paths and you are never quite sure which path you are on. I stayed on the trails only to find a clearing and realized I was no where close to my car. I had my phone who was tracking my run, it appeared somehow I was running in circles, I followed my gps as close as I could to get back to the main road before my phone died on me. I had to leave the trails and headed for the main road in order to get out of the woods. I walked along the main highway to get back to the parking lot where my car was. Unless they better identify the trails I do not believe I will be using this place as a hiking or running destination again. If you stay out of the woods, there is a nice shaded picnic area and small playground area right next to the parking lot, so you are sure not to get lost.
A nice little nature park in New Kent. Trails are not long, but worth a visit.
We got lost about 1/2 mile in. 3 groups of people met up with us asking if we knew the way back. By the time we figured out how to get to the entrance, we were a group of 7 adults and 2 dogs. Would not go back without a trail of bread crumbs.
Park is operated by New Kent County but trails are maintained mainly by local mountain bike club. At the time of this review, the park is recovering from 2 storms in Aug/Sept. Trails are open but the marking system is really bad. The county is aware and have future plans to remark trails. When you hike in a good distance, it is very quiet. I did not see any wildlife the day I went. Other than trails, there is not much more there.
