This course is definitely a favorite of mine.Pros:- Great clubhouse with great facilities.- Course is gorgeous and runs along the river the entire way.- One of the easier courses in the area IMHOCons:- Definitely needs some more challenging hills/blinds- With such a narrow course the fairways are parallel and close, meaning golfers are often in them from other holes.- Some spots need some leveling/TLC

This is a good course to do. Furthermore, we visited our family while in the area. Additionally, it is a good place to attend Virginia Tech football games.

My husband plays golf and I walk the course with him. Beautiful views. The only improvement we could see: It would be nice if some of the holes we cut into the hillside.

First, the staff was very busy with having to tend to two groups at one time. They were observant enough to bring a table outside so that a member of our party who was wheelchair bound had a place to set her drink. While two waitress made the rounds, we chose to get a drink from the bar. It was crazy busy but a manager stepped in and lent a hand. Second, the young man who ferried people from the upper parking lot was a truly appreciated. Third, the food was exceptional but (small suggestion) there wasn't a place to put dirty dishes. The waitstaff made every effort to keep the area picked up but a side table would have been nice. The view was magnificent and the breeze made the patio cool enough to enjoy.

Been playing this course before Pete Dye redesigned it. The greens before Dye redid them where more player friendly, typical Dye Design, greens played at strange angles for approach shots. Dye had all the trees removed along the river which opened open the course and allowed views of the scenic New River, but since then the management has allowed the undergrowth and small saplings to start growing back which is a shame. The greens had been slit-cut and they were sticky and on the slow side. And when we made the turn, there was a threesome starting on the back nine and the pro attempted to explain why we finished but I really didn't grasp his explanation . So the pace of play slowed to a snail's pace on the back nine/ All in all, thought the course would be in a better condition for being a university course with an excellent agronomy and horticultural programs.

So much fun! Staff very attentive and helped us locate a shady spot for our dog even though they were overrun with a wedding. We will go back!

This place has the most awesome view and features many outdoor weddings weather permitting. Great food and great service. Well priced for the quality of food and a great Happy Hour until 9 PM.

Played this course in mid-October and it was in great shape. I am an avid golfer and this was my first experience on a Pete Dye course--I was not disappointed. There are hidden challenges on virtually every hole, so spring for the yardage book so you know what to expect. I loved the small tricky bunkers and undulating fairways--classic Pete Dye design. On the down side, the greens were smallish and did not hold nearly as well as I expected. Not sure if it was lack of rain, time of year, or just firm greens, but plan on playing short of the hole and letting ball run to flag. Holes can seem close together due to limited to space in the river valley, but that was never a problem for our group. (The scenery and challenge from the New River more than made up for this.)Beautiful scenery, friendly staff, reasonably priced ($50.00 week day with a cart), and world famous course designer make this worth the drive. Call for directions, chances are your GPS won't get you there.

I had the pleasure of visiting the River Course in the early fall as the leaves started to change, for my cousin's wedding. As a New Orleans resident, this was a welcome sigh of relief from the humidity and heat. On top of it all, this course was an absolute pleasure to play on. Playing next to the river gives a player the calm serenity he needs to really appreciate being out on the course; the purpose behind it all. When things get frustrating, a quick glimpse of the surrounding foliage and water brings it all back home. The staff were equally welcoming. When I got there I was immediately greeted by a guy who knew more about golf, and was more passionate about the game than anyone I had met. Additionally, because I had to travel without my clubs, he was kind enough to let me borrow his forged Mizunos, and a putter that played like it was forged on Mount Olympus. The reason he didn't mind was because he would rather play with traditional wooden clubs, more representative of how the game was originally played. Hearing this, in combination with the calm I felt playing alongside an autumn induced riverside made it one of the most unforgettable and peaceful rounds of gold I'd ever played. I would recommend this course to anyone, for more reasons than most other courses could ever offer. Oh and the pulled pork quesadillas are nothing less than orgasmic.

The course is crowded into some flat land next to the New River and so the fairways are narrow and the greens are small. Then the designer had to artificailly makk things worse by filling the fairways and greens with moguls. The club house staff was very helpful amd made me feel welcome even though I was alone. The facility itself, both course and club house, are pristine. Prices are reasonable for seniors Monday through Thursday.

This a great course but the last time I played there it wasn't a good experince. They failed to inform me of a junior tournament when i made our tee time. We had to stay two holes back from them and we caught them quickly. The staff was rude. It is a beautiful and fun course to play but on that trip they had some kind of black fungus on the greens which felt like the ball was coming off the cart path. I would recomend when you call to set up a tee time you make sure there isn't any tournaments because they won't tell you.

I live on the Pete Dye course, so see it every day. It is located adjacent to the New River and the views are magnificant. Tough course to play ... beautiful clubhouse on the bluff ... Bull N Bones Restaurant for your eating pleasure.

This is the most overrated golf course I have ever played. They make you pay a cart fee even if you want to walk, and the course is a walking course. The holes are tight together, none of them stand out, yardages are off, and pot bunkers are poorly kept. For the price, you think they'd clean off your clubs after a round or give you some range balls. Only reason I gave it a poor is because the greens are spectacular, as is the case with a Pete Dye Course.

My family and I went to the Pete Dye River Course knowing a little of what to expect having played other Pete Dye designs. The course was in great shape for mid-October. Despite rough weather (very, very windy), the round was enjoyable. The course isn't to tough if you play the correct tees. I recommend following their suggestions and you should have a fun round.

A Pete Dye Signature course along the banks of the New River. Challenging holes in a beautiful setting. Dye took the natural lie of the land and environment to good advantage. Beautiful clubhouse offers lunch and early dinner managed by Bull and Bones.
