Got a great deal from Groupon for 2 tickets to the Shenandoah caverns and it was indeed worth every penny!Pros:1. Reach there early in the morning to avoid the rush that increases as the day progresses.2. It is definitely coller once you go underground so make sure to take along an outerwear in case you need one.3. Ample sitting area outside if you bring along your own food/drinks (picnic).4. Make sure to also visit the two neighboring attractions - American Celebrations (collection of parade floats) and the Yellow Barn (antique collections). 5. Very courteous and dedicated staff.
Having been to Luray Caverns (my first caverns visit) in the past, I kept my expectations low. It turned out I was wrong. This does offer its own beauty. Things I liked about it- good lighting effects- guided tour with really nice staff that lasts about an hour- cheaper than Luray (got discount on living social)- it is located quite deeper and can be cold. There is an elevator which takes you down.- nice souvenir collection- parking is available most of the time and it is free
We were getting tired of driving while on vacation when I noticed a sign on the main highway (81 I think) advertising Shenandoah Caverns so we decided to stop in and see what they were like and we were NOT disappointed. The caverns are absolutely beautiful, the people were extremely pleasant. Even the gift shop area had some really neat animated displays. .. they even have a few GIANT teddy bears there that were from a previous Rose Bowl Parade. The caverns were discovered by 2 boys in their early teens. After finding a rope to lower themselves down into a hole and exploring on their own they told their father what the found....and the rest is history.....These caverns were on their father's farm. What an amazing discovery these 2 kids made....The caverns are ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS and the lighting they've installed really enhances the beauty of all of the formations. The only disappointing thing was when the tour was over and we had to leave....I could have spent hours and hours just walking around looking at all of the beautiful formations. Every time you turned your head there was a different formation even if looking at the same one from a different angle was as if you were looking at a different formation. These caverns are only 1 mile off the main highway so you don't have to travel far to enjoy this beautiful creation of nature. My other regret is that I took a LOT of pictures but TripAdvisor (or maybe it's my phone) doesn't give me the option of going into my "Galary" where I created a folder of all the beautiful pictures I took. :( Pictures come out fantastic in the caverns either on you phone or camera... I wish i could share mine with you :(
Every bit as good as Luray Caverns without the cattle prod pushing you along through the crowds. The staff was very nice and allowed us to experience the caverns at our own pace.
This is a great day trip for the family. We took our boys (3, 8 and 10) and they all loved it. The tour guide did a wonderful job walking us thru the caverns into the different rooms. The tour lasted about an hour. You are allowed to take pictures. The elevator ride wasn't all that exciting, we were actually hoping we could use the large staircase from the gift shop but it was closed. I thought it was a little bit expensive but we were able to get a groupon so the price was really good. The temperature was around 53 degrees in the caverns so it was really comfortable considering the temperatures outside that day were in the teens. All tickets include a walk thru the American Parade exhibit, which really wasn't too exciting.
Everyone gave our day trip to Shenandoah Caverns a thumbs up. Nice views and a cool elevator ride down. Not recommended for kids under 8 or anyone with mobility difficulty. Camera a must.
It's very well worth the time and money to visit. It's already amazing that this is a natural creation and they make it very nice with the guided tour and lighting inside the caverns! must see!
Loved visiting the caverns. A guide takes you through each room and in some rooms they have colored lights shining all around for additional effect, but i found those to be a little cheesy. There were plenty of different spaces and formations for a ton of great photo ops. It's a little bit of a drive from Washington DC, so if i were to do it all over again, i would plan to stay in the area for a night and explore the national park as well.
Going during the offseason meant we were the only ones on the tour. Our guide brought us down and it really was quite beautiful. Pictures don't do them justice. We were educated on the different types of formations as we walked through. I did not feel the least bit claustrophobic. The rocks shaped like bacon were uncanny. Additionally, you get free admission to a couple attractions nearby - American Celebration on Parade and The Yellow Barn. I'd recommend the caverns for the Groupon price of $27 for 2.Tips:-Go during the offseason - (December) - It's less crowded-Meems Bottom Covered Bridge and the Potato chip factory are nearby - if you have time they are worth the price of admission (free:-))-As mentioned, Groupon is available.
The great thing about this attraction is that your admission includes entrance into Yellow Barn just down the road. The cave itself was great! Wonderful photo opportunities. Unfortunately for our visit, the elevator was out of order, so we had to do the stairs, which were manageable. However, I would recommend calling before heading out just in case this is an issue. Our guide was informative, but you can tell she did this hundreds of times before, so it was a bit like being spoken to by a bored teacher. However, if you like caves, definitely check this out! The walk is very accessible and the gift shop has plenty of fun purchase opportunities.
Good experience. Exactly as advertised - an hour guided tour. Easy to navigate - only a few places where ducking was required. No crawling or personal flashlight required. Good pics. Nice guide.
There are many things to like about these caverns but the overall visit was just OK. Nothing truly wowed us, but we were also not at all disappointed. The caverns and various unique formations were unlike anything I've seen. As a photographer, the caves offered pretty good photo ops. There is decent lighting, with the operators using different colored bulbs to give effect. The guides are pretty knowledgeable and never rush anyone who lags behind to take photos. The paths throughout the caverns are easy to navigate with only slight inclines - be careful for dripping water from above. The gift shop adequate and carries some unique items and typical museum shop items. The on-site eatery is a bit lackluster, so we didn't bother eating there. You're there for the caverns, not to eat. The Yesteryear windows display upstairs was interesting - some were creepy if you're creeped out by dolls and clowns, but otherwise it was a charm.Again, this was overall a good visit and worth the price of admission. Probably best for families with children, but it was a nice time for me and my girlfriend.
Wow! Is all my 2 year old kept saying as we walked around. This place is accessible with an elevator to the site. Very beautiful and our tour guide Patty was really good. She answered all questions involved all the kids in the group and took pictures for each group. If you present your AAA/CAA card you get a $3 discount adult tickets and $2 off a child's ticket.
The admission includes a 1 hour tour with a guide. The guide was very knowledgeable and friendly You enter the cavern via an elevator. This is nice because when you have finished the tour the elevator takes you back up to ground level.. Make sure you take a jacket because it is always chilly in the cavern.
We loved it. The guide was very informative loved all the formations nice that they can even tour the handy cap
