Leaves, not only in the boundaries, but in the long rough made it tough to find anything not in the fairway.
I stayed at the Wintergreen resort on a stay and play package. It was a great deal. The golf course is magnificant. I played Devils Knob which is the members course but you get access to it by staying at the resort. The golf course is tough, cut through the trees, up and down the mountain, and visually very pleasing. The best part of the golf course was the greens, they were perfect. By that I mean smooth, fast (STMP of 11), and lots of blades per square inch. I don't think they could be much better. You need to be paying attention to the slope or you will look silly. I highly recommend this place. What a surprise.
We were a group of 10 with two non golfers, so perfect for two foursomes. The upper course was in great shape. It was set up tough as it was their members championship weekend. The weather was perfect a little nippy early (wind shirt) but then just gorgeous. We all played up top Thursday and Saturday with a round at the bottom in between. This is a perfect golf couples get away. Only about two hours from Richmond. Be careful though as the top course and restaurants are members only now. Find someone to sign for you as we did. Great staff lot of help great restaurant( ask for Dwayne a Jamaican, great waiter)beautiful course in perfect shape.
Devils Knob is a very well maintained mountain course in the Wintergreen, VA ski resort. As would be expected, the course has a number of elevation changes being on the mountain. Also as to be expected, because this is primarily a ski resort there are a number of homes and condos lining the course. The course is rather short and tight, so driver is really not needed. I found the course to be very well maintained, but in the end I really prefer a more open course (a course with more land available to plot the holes). Putting is difficult because of the various elevation changes that are not always obvious while standing on the on the greens. Bottom line...it's a nice course given what was there to work with....not my particular cup of tea however...
Top notch...greens perfect along with the fairways...rough was high due to rain and we lost some balls...oh well...Very nice day with my son...priceless;>
Enjoyed this course and the other course on several occasions. We always enjoy going there and have brought friends on several occasions.
The only negative thing I can say about Devil's Knob is that this is only the second time I have played this mountaintop gem. But that is my fault. Conditions in 2013 look to be as perfect as they were last year. The greens were said to be about "two weeks away"...they were the best greens I've putted on since I last played here. This place is top shelf! If there is a better golfing experience around I haven't found it yet.
It's target golf at its finest. Beautiful scenery at every turn & a gold course in spectacular shape.
We play Devils Knob regularly. It's a fun course especially for those who can keep it in the fairway. If you like mountain golf with beautiful vistas, this is a great course to try!
My husband has traveled the world and golfed all over. He gave high marks to Devils Knob. The concept of a family lesson and nine holes with the kids is wonderful. My girls always goofed around with Daddy's clubs but could never golf with him, until now. Thank you for allowing them to share some special time together!
Devils Knob is in excellent shape from tee to green. The fairways look like carpet, they are in such good shape. You will be hard pressed to find any "bad spots" in the fairways. They are exceptional! Even the rough is beautiful...but really thick and very punishing. Stay out of it if you can. Devils Knob is somewhat short compared to other courses (6712 from the tips), but is challenging. Don't underestimate this layout--it will test your ability to place the ball strategically. Great staff, great course, and a great restaurant (Devils Grill) for after the round. And, as the highest golf course in the state of VA, Devils Knob is at the Wintergreen Resort, which is a ski, golf, and spa resort just SW of Charlottesville. Try the resort, and definitely the golf at Devils Knob. They have this course on the mountain and another 27 holes in the valley, so there's plenty to choose from.
nice views, good beer selection, cool building with lots of locally used natural resources. close to wintergreen
