I always enjoy visiting museums that keep all or most of their aircraft flying. This place is no exception as a lot of the aircraft are in flying conditions and very well looked after. The staff was great and helpful. You won't be disappointed here!
what a really nice museum with lots of airplanes... great information on all of them... the airplanes are beautiful - so well maintained, colorful... such history on them... I highly recommend this to anyone even a non-airplane fanatic ( like me ) I really enjoyed it.
As far as air museums go, the Cavanaugh Flight Museum is pretty standard. It has four hangars, each containing a selection of aircraft (and the odd car), and there's also a section in the entrance building that houses a huge collection of paintings of aircraft. If you like planes, you'll like this museum. So far, so good. However, there is one absolutely massive issue: none of the hangars have any form of air conditioning. On the day I visited, the temperature was well over 30C (or a touch over 100F if you're American) and for me, as a Brit, it was completely overwhelming. Being outside was like standing under the flame of a giant blowtorch and walking around the inside of the hangars was like being microwaved alive. There are small air conditioned areas in between the hangars, but all this did was make the unrelenting heat worse when I had to walk back into it.Now, don't get me wrong: obviously, I'm not blaming the museum for the heat - I can't even believe I'm complaining about it being sunny - but, given that the entire complex is housed in big metal buildings, surely logic suggests that some kind of cooling system be put in place? Even strategically placed fans would have helped.Back to the purpose of the review; this is a good museum. I would have liked to have spent more time there, but it just wasn't going to happen in those temperatures!Good points: lots of exhibits, good use of space, great gift shop.Bad points: too damn hot to do it justice.
The service, location and overall venue made this a wonderful choice for an important fund-raiser for a deserving nonprofit organization. Highly recommend if you are looking for a special place to host and event.
We stumbled upon this museum when visiting my daughter in Carrollton in 2012. (Trip advisor will only let me go back as far as Feb. 2014, so that's why there is a discrepancy in dates.) It's located at the Addison Airport. My daughter's boyfriend told us about one of the old warbirds that would fly in and out of there. As we were waiting to meet up with my daughter we saw the sign for the museum, and decided to take a look. It is huge! We spent most of an afternoon exploring all of the buildings. If you are in the Dallas area, give this place a visit. If you are lucky Fifi might even be in her hanger.
Excellent aviation museum on the grounds of Addison Airport. Very nice collection of warbirds, most of which are in pristine condition! A number of the plane are flyable and flight experiences can be purchased. Great, helpful staff along with a nice gift shop. Absolutely worth a visit !!
for the aircraft aficionado. If you love aircraft or military history do yourself a big favor and stop by Addison TX and visit the Cavanaugh Flight Museum. My wife and I went and spent a few very enjoyable hours touring the facilities and static displays. My new background pic on my phone is now me in front of one of my favorite WW II aircraft...the Corsair, gull wing, whistling death, their model is actually the FG-1D but hey it's still a Corsair. The Spitfire is absolutely beautiful (another favorite of mine) as are a number of their restorations. They may well have some on-going projects in some of the hangers and if you don't get in the way you are welcome to watch the volunteers working on some genuine history! Really good stuff!!!
We have visited this museum more than once and have enjoyed the displays immensely. The planes are in great shape!
I didn't know about this place until our hotel staff suggested it. Look, it isn't the Air & Space annex in Reston, VA, the RAF museum near London, the Wright-Patterson USAF museum or the myriad other aviation museums I've visited but it's well worth a stop if you're an aviation buff or former military pilot from the Vietnam area. My only disappointment was that, of all the historic aircraft dating back from WWI, the only one in a disreputable state was the lone forlorn Huey. As a former helicopter gunship pilot, I felt it lacked even the slightest prominence compared to every other aircraft on display. Hey, I've always thought of fixed wing pilots as those who couldn't learn to hover!
Excellent flight museum the OV-1 Mohawk Association's visited during their 25th Reunion. They were all impressed that the Cavanaugh had a OV-1 Mohawk.
The Calvin off-white museum had many more aircraft than I thought they would. Most of the aircraft are in great shape. The old planes are kept in flying condition. We spent much more time than anticipated due to the number of planes on display.
The Cavanaugh Flight Museum is located at the Addison Airport, near Dallas, Texas. It has greatly inproved since I last went there in the late 90's. Aircraft to see include: the F-4C, MiG-21, P-51D, F-104A, A-26, AH-1S, B-25, P-40, YAK-3M, F-105F, FM-2, TBM-3E, and Bf-109. There are many others there to see, and a few, for a fee, to fly. A great place to visit. Entrance is $10. (972) 380-8800
A visit to the Cavanaugh Flight Museum (4572 Claire Chennault St.) in Addison, TX, was very interesting. The "old warbirds" here are kept in flying condition and make appearances at special occasions. You can walk among the planes; perhaps some are being worked on; others in flight. Great experience for anyone interested in planes of the WWII era. We were part of a group from the Flying Tiger AVG Reunion, and the museum did a special fly-by for the guys; very inspiring and much appreciated seeing the P-40 airborn. They also brought some planes down to another museum we visited the following day.
Just a wonderful way to spend the day. Great collection of aircraft from different eras. So very worth the price of admission. You don't have to be a pilot or have a great deal of knowledge about flight to enjoy this trip.
Enjoyed visiting this museum with my husband, especially watching his delight at seeing several aircraft from his days in Vietnam. Also interesting that you can take a flight with an instructor on some of these war-time-era planes that are in working order. The gift shop is well-stocked--we bought several items, including a red t-shirt with 'remove before flight', like a pitot cover flag. Cute! There is also a nice area to sit, have a drink, and cool off from the 100+ outside temps! The lady at the reception desk was very helpful, informative, and nice.
