Don't be fooled by the appearance. All you can see from the road is a tiny building and a Pizza Hut sign. The fort is actually behind the Pizza Hut. This is one of those Western frontier forts you see in the movies. Except this one is real. It has been very well preserved. There is an excellent museum with all sorts of unusual items. Take your time exploring the grounds. I spent about two hours here and enjoyed every minute.
I brought my father, son and granddaughter to see the place our family established itself in Texas. They've done an excellent job in preserving the old homestead. I recommend a visit to anyone who is interested in early life in frontier Texas.
All the old cabins and other stuff at the Fort Croghan was donated to them from families of Burnet County. It is free of charge to enter. The only draw back is that they are only open in the summertime and in Oct they do have Fort Croghan days which is great, people will dress up they did in the 1800's and act the part, have games as they did back then and food too as they have back then.
