Nothing can quite prepare you for how many bats there actually are, and quite how many folks turn out to see them..don't bother with a bat tour, just hang out in the park just below the bridge and all will be revealed just before dusk. One of Nature's great must-see, with the bonus that it's totally free :)

Sadly, upon our arrive in Austin we learned that the bats vacation for the winter in Mexico...so we will have to return in the summer to witness this. And will be happy to return to Austin in the future.

We did this, it was fun, but don't get there until just before last light. The bats come out when it is nearly dark. We got there too early and got to see some drunks pass out in the road. Overall, a must see in Austin but don't pay to go on a tour or anything just walk out onto the bridge or hang in the park nearby.

It's just fun on a summer night waiting with all the people at the bridge, and then finally seeing all the bats stream and stream and stream in an endless ribbon of black. Thanks to them for eating all our bugs! Good for all ages. No bathrooms nearby except in stores or shops. You could use the road in a wheelchair, but walkers can go below onto the grass along the river. OK for all ages, teens, families, dates, whatever.

Really cool looking when they start flying out. Have to walk quiet a ways from parking. I would like to rent a boat next time I go.

This is a unique Austin experience you should not miss. Go early to get a nice spot on the bridge or next to it - have a picnic while you wait. There is a hotline you can call to get an estimated time that the bats will be seen, but go 30 minutes early just in case. Parking is tough, give yourself extra time to enjoy your walk over to the bridge.

This is a fantastic daily happening.Nature at its best.Thousands and thousands of bats going to dinner every evening at sundown. Very unique.

This is a must see for all visitors who enjoy mother nature's performances. One does not have to be under the Bridge to see the flight of Bats at sunset. There are many good vantage points along the river. Yet a visit to check out the underside of the bridge certainly lets you know where these mammals are coming from.

There is a big hype about all the bats coming out from under the bridge at dusk, but this only happens during certain times of the year, the rest of the time the bats are in Mexico. For some strange reason, the bats find the bridge over the lake on Congress a great place to have their offspring, and Austin provides them with plenty of mosquitos to munch on during the time they are there. I have been disappointed many times thinking that the bats would come out, and they did not. I am not sure of the best dates for viewing, but I think it is in the late summer and fall.

I heard the bats don't show up in the winter, and I actually just happened to be there at dusk one day this winter so I stopped anyway. Sure enough, no bats. If you come during the colder weather months, do some research to know when they come.
