We are geocachers so like to visit cemteries. Jesse James is buried here, but we never did find his grave.
Easy cemetery to find and even though Jessie James is buried there it's not commercialized. Locals told us to drive to the very back of the cemetery. You will see a street sign pointing to the grave and it's just a few steps from the dirt lane. Very easy access. I'm glad we went to see it.
Learn about the area history. You will find the grave of General Hiram Granbury, a Civil War General killed in action at the Battle of . Also see the grave of Jesse James and don't try and tell the local's that he wasn't the "real" Jesse James. A very historical little town, with a renovated town square and County Courthouse. The cemetery is located on a hill overlooking the town square and if you explore it carefully, you will learn about all the events and people that built the town. Lots to do, including museums, tours of old buildings and victorian homes, a historically correct renovated courthouse, the oldest opera house in Texas (still has plays there regularly) and more legends than you can imagine. Enjoy.
Walked through this cemetery with my husband and 10 YO daughter recently, and we loved it. There are graves that are over 100 years old. It's fascinating to see how some have been kept up remarkably well while others are falling apart. It's a beautiful site with lots of trees and unique markers as well. If you are a graveyard or history buff I would recommend it. Not at all spooky. It was fun to see the controversial grave of Jesse James as well.
The Granbury Cemetery offers a bit of everything for those who enjoy authentic and faux history. Although the most famous "non-resident's" grave site - Jesse James (not actually buried and probably never resided in Granbury, Tx) - will attract most visitors the most authentic and interesting representations of local and state history can be found on the inscriptions of the other residents' of the cemetery. Take time to wander about the cemetery to read the late 18th, 19th and early 20th century epitaphs of those who helped settled in Texas, fought the battles/wars of Texas and the United States and were truly a part of Granbury's local history and its place in the state's and nation's history.
We of course had to come here to see Jesse James grave but we really enjoyed walking around and seeing the history and people that were there. Very well kept and a nice finally resting spot.
Whether or not Jesse james is really buried there does not matter. It is a nice place with a lot of history.
Well maintained. Many interesting stones. On a hill overlooking the town.
Grounds are peaceful. Lots of people decorate the headstones on different holidays.
nice stop on the granbury visit easy to find ... just follow the signs or ride the trolley ...its free
Lots of history with tantalizing hints of mysteries to be researched!
It was fun to ride the trolley to the Cemetery but don't go out of your way to walk there unless you're a huge Jesse James fan.
Seems a bit odd to go exploring around an old cemetery, but when we heard that Jesse James was buried here, we had to check it out for ourselves ... and sure enough, there was his gravestone - covered in pennies! Apparently there's a lot of debate whether there's truth to the authenticity, but I guess it just adds to the curiosity. We also came across the gravestone of the founder of Granbury, General Hiram B. Granberry. who killed on the porch of his headquarters during a Civil War battle in TN.Pretty cool place to explore. Loads of beautiful old oak trees. Many of the graves have no identification because they were only marked by a stone, a few of the very old markers are hard to read, or can no longer be read. We also had a look for this 'not-so-notable bird dog named Rex', but weren't successful - guess we'll just have to make another trip out there to look again. If you check the place out in the summer time, bring some water and a hat. Also wear flats if you're going to wander around and read some of the gravestones as the ground is not level in places.
